Colin Brown Obituary

February 26, 1932 - May 4, 2019 The Rev. Dr. Colin Brown passed away peacefully at home in Altadena on May 4, 2019, age 87, surrounded by his children, closest friends, and dedicated care-givers. He was born in Bradford, England, in 1932. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1958 and became Vice Principal of Tyndale Hall Theological College, which later formed Trinity College, Bristol, England. His education included a BA from Liverpool University, a BD from the University of London, an MA and a DD from Nottingham University and a PhD from the University of Bristol. He came to the US in 1978, serving as Professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Seminary, Pasadena, until 2010, rising to Associate Dean for Advanced Theological Studies in 1988. During this time, he also served as Associate Priest at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, Altadena, until his recent illness. He was the author of many scholarly articles and books including "Miracles and the Critical Mind" and "Jesus in European Protestant Thought." He gained recognition for editing "The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology," and received numerous honors and awards, including first place on the Critics' Commended List of Books in the LA Times. Colin continued his research and writing up until shortly before his death. His most recent book focused on "Quests of the Historical Jesus." A humble and gentle man, he leaves an extensive academic legacy and was revered by his students, colleagues and friends alike. In addition to being passionate about his preaching, research and teaching, he was a keen rose grower, gladly sharing his broad knowledge of roses with others. His children would like to thank the many friends who helped him through the last months of his life, especially Nancy and George, Joanne and Jim, Dr. Mary, Brenda, and his recent care givers, Clifford and Menchu. Sincere thanks also to the Reverends Carri Patterson Grindon and Betsy Hooper-Rosebrook, his dear colleagues in ministry, and the parishioners of Saint Mark's Church, for their friendship, love and support. Colin was predeceased by his second wife, Olive, and is survived by his first wife, Sylvia, and their children, Verity (Philip), Matthew (Caroline) and Stephanie (Graham), and five grandchildren. A memorial service is to be held at Saint Mark's Church, 1014 E. Altadena Drive, Altadena, on Monday, 13 May at 6.30pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Mark's Church.

It was sad news to hear of Colin's death. He is sorely missed. He and Olive were always so gracious and kind to Robert and me. We visited many times over leisurely dinners. Those dinners were a series of the most interesting conversations. Robert, who had been recently welcomed into the ranks of clergy by Bhp., Borsh, both from Princeton Theological Seminary, and Colon had terrific discussions. We so enjoyed our time at St. Mark's with all the beautiful congregants and the music directed by David Billiter. Those times have passed, and both Colin and Robert have had all their questions answered. An excellent scholar and generous human being. May he rest in eternal peace and rise in glory.

Colin and Olive were dear friends to Pat and me during our five years at St. Mark's. One of my joys was sharing with him the presiding role at the Thursday 6:30 am Eucharists following my reception as a priest. Our thoughts and prayers are with Colin's family and the people of St. Mark's.

Toni Freeman Stuart. St. Mark's sponsored me for ordination many years ago, and Colin gave me an alb which he no longer wore. It is lightweight cotton, and I have worn it every single Sunday when I celebrated at the Chapel of St. Francis in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Sacramento. Both of those churches could get a little toasty in the summer and I was always glad of Colin's lightweight alb.
A generous and gentle man!

Colin and Olive were so kind and loving to me when I studied at Fuller and afterwards as well. Always encouraging. I emailed him last year and he wrote about how the book was coming along. "I reckon that the First Quest began with the delegation of scribes from Jerusalem (Mark 3). " I can see the smile he probably had on his face when he wrote it. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a gift to make the complicated simple, and when he would pray humbly to the Lord at the start of class -- I was always moved. I often said his systematic theology was a notebook, not a bound volume, as he taught us to continue learning God's Truth. "Grant eternal joy to Colin, O Lord, in Your Presence; and let light perpetual shine upon him." Thank you, God, for this dear man who has impacted so many of our lives.
