Edward Kantor Obituary

February 14, 1929 - September 16, 2020 Our Dr. Ed was born on Valentine's Day in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the only son of parents, Edythe Weinberg and Cantor Abraham Kantor. Dr. Ed always knew he wanted to be a doctor. He would wear his pajamas backward to elementary school to look like a doctor. Dr. Ed worked since the time he was 15 years old, first as a street cleaner and next as a construction worker. Dr. Ed received his M.D. at the University of Nebraska in 1954. At the time of his admittance, the university only accepted 6 Jewish students into the medical school. Dr. Ed was one of them. After medical school, Dr. Ed had a one-year internship at the Wadsworth VA Hospital at UCLA. It was there he decided to become an ear, nose and throat specialist. At the time, head and neck tumors were an exciting new field. Following his internship, Dr. Ed had his first year of residency at UCLA and the VA until he was drafted into the US military for the Korean War. While in basic training, the government realized he was a doctor, and shipped him off to Iceland where he became at age 28 Chief Surgeon for NATO forces in Iceland. When Dr. Ed returned to the U.S., he went back to his practice at the VA in Westwood in an ENT residency program. It was then he met and married his late wife, Elaine Greene, with whom he had two daughters, Debra and Kathy. Dr. Ed also had two grandsons, Spencer and Aaron Kohn. Following his residency, Dr. Ed joined the practice of Dr. Henry Rubin where he built one of the most prestigious ENT practices in the country. The saddest time of Dr. Ed's life was when his daughter, Kathy, passed away from cancer in 2000. While himself a humble man, Dr. Ed became famously known as the "ENT to the Stars." Most celebrities, singers or actors who had vocal issues were treated by Dr. Ed. He was featured in People Magazine, August 1978 and was named Lear Magazine's Most Eligible Bachelor in Beverly Hills. He specialized in diseases and disorders of the ear, nose and throat as well as other parts of the head and neck including the sinuses, larynx and mouth. Areas of expertise included allergies; facial reconstructive surgery; head and neck; laryngology; otology/neurotology; pediatric otolaryngology; and rhinology. He was board certified in Otolaryngology. He was a trail blazer in endoscopic surgery and along with Karlz Storz and George Berci created and patented the Kantor-Berci video laryngoscope, still used worldwide today. Dr. Ed practiced medicine for over 50 years and stopped practicing at the top of his profession. In 2005, Dr. Ed started dating the love of his life, Harriet Hochman. Together, they checked off his bucket list and traveled all over the world, from attending classes at Oxford University to doing the samba during Carnival in Rio de Janiero. Harriet and her family were by Dr. Ed's side when he passed. Due to the restrictions of Covid, funeral services were private. A celebration of our Dr. Ed's amazing life will be held in the future so that all that loved and admired him can gather to share stories and celebrate his life so well lived.

I am sorry for this trendous loss of an exceptional person.
I was a patient of Dr. Kantor's from a very young age into my late teens (1970-1985)
I have Cystic Fibrosis and he was the surgeon who removed my nasal polyps (many times).
My mom was so grateful for him, and others (Dr. Herbert Levin, Pediatrics, Beverly Hills) who wonderfully cared for and treated a child with a rare, unknown disease.

Love and blessings to his family and friends.

I was a patient of Dr. Kantor's since I was about 18 months until he retired. Over the years, he was more of my PCP. I never went to any other doctor except him. He took out my tonsils, put tubes in my ears, and was just the most caring physician I have ever known. I have never had the same care from any other doctor. I was so sad when he retired and I am devastated to know he is no longer with us. My daughter has had a cough for the last 4 weeks and I thought about Dr. Kantor wishing I could take her to him only to come to find out he has passed. Thank you Dr. Kantor for taking such great care of me. RIP.

Dr Kantor was my ENT from age 5 til my early 40´s when my sinus problems seemed to dissipate. He pulled my tonsils, stuck a dye filled tube down my nose, blew out my ears and saw me through a host of sinus infections. He was so handsome and FUN! My mom was single and when I was little I was dying for my mom marry him. his office was so beautiful and swanky and even tubes down my nose never deterred me from visiting Dr Kantor. I remember when the Lear´s issue came out, and I can still see him in the chair with the headband on his forehead. My condolences to his family - a life well lived!

I knew Dr. Kantor as far back as 1967 when I worked at Schwab's in BH. He came in every day for lunch and we often shared a salad. In later years, I worked for him for several years. I watched his beautiful girls grow up. His daughter Kathy was his spitting image and I know he was devastated when she passed. His pride for Debbie, his oldest always shined in his eyes. He was funny, sincere and got along with everyone who was honored to cross his path. He loved being the doctor to the stars and they all adored him. If anyone in the "business" was ill, Eddie was the "go to". He will be missed as a father, doctor and all around good guy. I have wonderful memories and stories to tell. Love to Debbie and her family on his passing.

I have cried for two days after reading that Dr. Kantor has passed away. I absolutely adored this man. For over 40 years, my family has driven from Newport Beach to Beverly Hills to see Dr. Kantor. Dr. Kantor removed my tonsils 53 years ago when I was 7 years old. He took care of my son over the years as well. Tubes in his ears when he was 1- tonsils removed at 9 and sinus surgery at 19). When he discharged my son after tonsil surgery - I literally watched Dr. Kantor walk down the hall at Cedars Sinai just in awe...completely aware of how great he was. My dad had prostate surgery years ago and Dr. Kantor came to the Cedars Sinai to visit him (not his surgery but yet he came to make sure my dad was doing well). I went to Dr. Kantor one time because I was having trouble swallowing. He examined me and said everything looked fine. He sat back in his chair and asked me what else was going on. I got choked and told him that I had lost a close family member who was only 46 years old. Dr. Kantor looked at me with the most compassionate look (God...I will always remember that look - such goodness in his heart), then he got up from his chair and gave me a hug and told me he promised it would get easier in time. I cried when I received Dr. Kantor's notice that he was retiring. My son and I took a day off from work and drove from Newport to Beverly Hills to give Dr. Kantor a thank you note and to say goodbye to him in person on his last day at 435 N. Bedford Dr., Suite 203. The same office he had - the practice he built - since I was a little girl. Where did the time go??! Dr. Kantor had a presence of true greatness....of genuine goodness! Yet he was also easy to talk to and he had a good sense of humor. My dad loved talking to him. I have so many wonderful memories of this great man. I can still hear his voice and see his smile and the compassion in his eyes. My heartfelt condolences to all who were his family and all who loved him. Thank you Dr. Kantor! You were one of a kind! My family and I will always remember you and cherish the years of care you gave us! It was a blessing knowing you! God bless!

Dr. Kantor hired me, a UCLA nursing student, to assist in his office. As a student, I was thrilled to provide service which occasionally involved a patient home visit. When I graduated, Dr. Kantor offered me an ongoing role as a nurse in the office and as scrub nurse on his surgical team. Although that did not come to be, I was, nonetheless, so appreciative of this interprofessional opportunity. Years later, as faculty for the University of Arizona College of Nursing, I was one of the leaders in interprofessional education--nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and public health. I am grateful for Dr. Kantor for mentoring me as a young professional and introducing me to the value of interprofessional practice. Cathy Michaels

My father and Dr. Kantor attended University of Nebraska School of Medicine together and became lifelong friends. I had the opportunity to share a few meals with Ed whenever my parents visited me in LA. He sent a floral arrangement for my father's funeral. He was a true mensch and wonderful friend to my father. May his memory be a blessing.
