Frederic Einar Bloomquist

1964 - 2022

Frederic Einar Bloomquist, the first son of Charles and Terry Bloomquist, died Friday, August 19. He was 57.

Born December 22, 1964, in Santa Monica and named for both of his grandfathers, Fred possessed a superior intellect and a keen sense of humor. He was equally at home discussing politics as seeing how many grapes he could stuff into his mouth. Like the lead character from his favorite movie, "Cool Hand Luke," Fred was an original. Friends and family gravitated to him for his wit, warmth, irreverence, and charm. He loved a spirited debate, holding genuine interest in a variety of topics and enthusiasm for differing points of view.

Fred graduated from St. Monica's Catholic High School in 1983, and later earned his BA in communications from California State University, Dominguez Hills. A library clerk and bookbinder by trade, Fred worked at both the Rand Corporation's research, and Loyola Law School libraries. Fred enjoyed a great cup of coffee, a good martini, a fine watch, and a comfortable pair of sandals. A native of Venice, California, he married Angélica Martinez in 2000 and settled in San Pedro to raise their son Andrés.

A jazz aficionado and self-taught musician, Fred enjoyed playing piano and was blessed with a silky singing voice. His taste in music was broad, ranging from artists like Horace Silver and Charles Mingus to The English Beat. Fred was also a bit fond of the four-part harmonies of a barbershop quartet.

Fred was predeceased in 2015 by his wife, Angie. He is survived by son Andrés; his parents, Charles and Terry; sisters Carla, Kristen, and Alexis; brothers Charles and Neil; and 13 nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass at St. Clement Catholic Church in Venice will be held Saturday, September 10 at 10 a.m.
