Helen Kelley Obituary

May 21, 1925 - October 31, 2019 Helen Kelley, IHM (Sister William) left this life marching in to join all saints on the eve of All Saints day, October 31. She was 94 and died peacefully at the IHM Residence in Los Angeles, where she had lived in community after her longtime service in academia and in the public sector. She was born to William and Frances Kelley in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and had two siblings, Donald and Mary Jean, who predeceased her.As President of Immaculate Heart College from 1963-1977, after having served as Graduate Dean since 1960, she presided over an academic community that was known, not only for its creative programs in art, music, and theater, but also for engagement by faculty and students in domestic and global issues – especially the Vietnam war. Posters, assemblies, visiting dignitaries – all supported the anti-war sentiment that permeated the campus. Holding to the highest academic standards, Dr. Kelley was a model of truth-telling, disciplined thought, and insightful analysis. She encouraged Corita-created celebrations on Mary's day and urged the college community to "Choose life" despite the climate of fear, racism, and national unrest. Her tenure at the college spanned the years that the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart transitioned to the Immaculate Heart Community.Helen Kelley was a leader in the Immaculate Heart Community, having served as President from 1993-1996. She had entered the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart in 1945, and received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of St. Louis in 1958, then joined the faculty of Immaculate Heart College. In the late sixties, Helen participated in Community deliberations in response to Vatican Council II, which urged religious communities to adapt to the modern world. She was a leader in opting for change in the face of Archdiocesan opposition to the Community's stance on independent decision-making that involved significant communal changes. With the leadership of Anita Caspary, IHM, she was one of the major writers who framed the document that would guide the life and spirit of the new ecumenical Immaculate Heart Community, established in 1970. Helen's writing to this day remains a testimony to her deep spirituality, her brilliant intellect, and her fidelity to truth and self-determination. Twenty-three years ago, as IHM President, Helen was instrumental in the formation of an IHM collaboration with Alexandria House, a transitional residence in Los Angeles for homeless women and women with children, founded by Judy Vaughan, CSJ. Helen Kelley lived a long productive life, known for her wit and wisdom and for her speeches, pithy and profound. Following her academic career, she was the Deputy Associate Director for Older Americans Volunteer Programs of the federal ACTION program, 1977-1981 during the Carter administration. She was Education Director of People for the American Way from 1982-1985, followed by three years as a consultant to several foundations. In 1988 she became the Executive Director at Josephson Institute for Ethics in the Professions. In intervening years, she was writing the history of the IHMs. She remains a towering presence in the annals of the IHM Community. Survivors are nieces, Margo Morrison and Molly Hawkins and four grandnephews and two grandnieces. It is with joy and gratitude that the Immaculate Heart Community celebrates the life and times of beloved Helen Kelley, IHM. The memorial Mass to celebrate her life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22 in the Calvary Cemetery chapel, 4201 Whittier Blvd, Los Angeles 90023. A reception will follow the burial. Kindly rsvp to [email protected] if you plan to attend the reception.Donations to honor the life of Helen Kelley, IHM may be made to the Immaculate Heart Community Residence, 435 S. Kenmore Ave., #202, Los Angeles, CA 90020.

Kelley was my sociology professor in 1962 and we stayed connected for the rest of our lives. She met my children and my twin granddaughter when they were new born. After she passed I was given a stack of notated cards about many ideas that were on her mind as she reflected on IHM history. I kept them for a couple of years and then cut them up like leaves and seeds and planted them under a tree in my garden glen. I hold her close in my heart.

Kelley was one a gifted intellectual. She was kind. Many a time I still hear her advice. In the last the 6 years of her life I visited her almost every day. She is missed and remembered with love and fondess.

I graduated from Immaculate Heart College in 1969. Helen, then Sister William, was distributing each graduate's diploma and announcing the level of their degrees at graduation. When I came up for my diploma, she said said "summa cum laude", smiled in that wry way she had, and said, "Show off!" I loved and admired her then and always will. A truly great woman. We shall not see her like again.

Helen Kelley was a remarkable and wonderful human being and leader. My mother, Margaret Lindgren, IHM, admired and delighted in her wisdom and wit, which she shared thoughtfully with all she encountered. I appreciated the opportunities I had to listen to her and thought she embodied the best of leadership. She was a woman with sterling qualities in so many ways. Thank you for the beautiful obituary which captures Helen Kelley the person, her work, and life beautifully.

Helen Kelley and Mary Gerald Shea lived together on the first floor at Commonwealth. For a while there was an Irish contingent-Kelley, Shea, Welch, Green, Jordan, Egan and Murray. I had to change my name to McNavarro. She will be missed by so many.

I have many memories of Helen, Starting with being welcomed at my first convocation in the ihc auditorium, Her speeches were always so full of knowledge, wit, and caring. I would sometimes take stage in the empty Auditorium, bombasting my way thru various monologues. More than once Kelley silently slid through the doors and listened to my ravings. Unless waved off by her secretary Marion, I would drop in on her anytime her inner door was open, which was most of the time. Especially when I picked up a couple dozen carnations from the florist on Western. Then there was the time I suggested that she let me park a VW bus on campus so to keep an eye on things and she arranged for me to stay in the maid's room in Regina Coeli in exchange for a walk around campus each night. I was heartbroken when she left her position of President. She was one of the most engaging people I have ever met.

Helen Kelley was the embodiment of the true spirit of Immaculate Heart College. I held her in high esteem during my years at IHC and will always remember the atmosphere that she created through her wisdom and always just management of our wonderful college. She was an inspiration.

I graduated from IHC, class of 72'; it was my honor to know her and to love her. She gave us courage, strength, and wisdom; she taught us how to celebrate life.
May she rest in peace "y que dios la tenga en su gloria."

I truly loved and admired Helen Kelley. I was a graduate of the class of '76 from Immaculate Heart, and although I moved to Northern CA, I would attend reunions and she always remembered my name. Her wit and intellect and kindness made a lasting impression on me.

After I joined the Immaculate Heart Community in 1998 as one of the very few non-Catholics, Kelley would call me about once a month just to chat. to find out what I was doing and how things were going. I did not yet have many friends in the Community; maybe they were scared of me because I was an Episcopal priest, but Kelley was not scared and I valued her calls. They meant a lot to me.

While a college sophomore in her Theology Lab, Helen taught all of us that an engagement with social ethics is as fundamentally required for a meaningful life as personal ethics is. She lived that insight her whole life with commitment, grit, and humor. She changed my life and I have always been grateful to her for her example.

"Kelley" as she was known to IHMs and friends had a remarkable memory -- for IHM Community milestones and stories, for historical events, and for repeatable jokes. She inspired colleagues, students, IHMs to work for justice, for human rights, and women's rights. We will miss her, but rejoice that she joins Mary Gerald Shea, IHM, Corita, and all who welcome her into their heavenly company.
