Henry Louria Obituary

April 18, 1926 - January 31, 2023 Henry Walter Louria, Jr., aged 96, died peacefully, surrounded by close family, on January 31, 2023.
He was born on April 18, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York and attended Graham Eckes School in Daytona Beach, Florida, enlisting in the United States Navy at the early age of seventeen as part of the "Kiddie Cruise" program. Upon completion of his service, he attended Colgate College under the G.I. bill. It was during his medical school training at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons that he met Eva Speier, whom he married in April 1950.
Upon the successful completion of his medical residency in general surgery, Hank and Eva, and their two sons, Ken and Marc, moved to Orange County where he developed a thriving surgical private practice in Garden Grove, later going on to work for the County of Orange as the Chief Physician at the Orange County Jail, as well as the Orange County Public Health Department's alcohol and recovery programs. In 1999, he married his lovely wife, Judith. A particular source of pride for him was the twenty years of service in the California National Guard, retiring from the Guard at the age of seventy with the rank of Colonel.
Hank often talked about his "attitude of gratitude" regarding the blessings in his life, and he did his very best to stay true to this intention of gratitude.
Among the blessings of his life were the caring and love that he felt for those closest to him - his loving wife Judith, his loving sons, Ken and Marc and their life partners, his loving grandchildren, Josh and Erin, and the two stepdaughters whom he held close to his heart, Beth and Mary Kay.
His passions, which he shared with his wife, Judith, included Shakespeare and classical music, and his frequent visits to Tokyo, Venice, and Lisbon, cities whose vibrancy and beauty touched his heart and spirit.
As a diehard aficionado of film noir, an event that Hank looked forward to every year was the annual family gathering in San Francisco for the Film Noir Festival at the Castro Theater, which in included a family breakfast at Swan's Oyster Depot, a ferry ride across the San Francisco Bay, and many memorable hours of just talking and being together.
He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his life, and to have known his sharp wit, his hearty laugh and smile, and the caring that he felt for those closest to him.
Services will be held Wednesday, February 8, at 1:30pm at Harbor Lawn-Mount Olive Memorial Park, 1625 Gisler Avenue, Costa Mesa, California.
