James Bashor Obituary

August 25, 1931 - January 25, 2018 James "Jim" Theodore Bashor, 86, was born August 25, 1931 in Covina, California, to the late Orin Paul Bashor and Edith M. Hay. Jim passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018, with his wife Dianne by his side from complications related to COPD. He died peacefully and without pain. Having moved to San Diego, Jim graduated from Hoover High School. He later joined the Army and was part of the Berlin Airlift. Jim's commitment to the military continued throughout his life. He actively supported the Military Day Parade and the USS Midway. His lifelong patriotism culminated with one of San Diego Zoo's largest gifts providing support for the Zoo's Wounded Warrior Project and free admission in perpetuity for active members of the military and their families. After being honorably discharged from the military, Jim decided he needed to earn his college degree. Having watched numerous football games at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Jim decided to attend University of Southern California where he graduated with a Master's degree in Business Administration. USC also became one of Jim's favorite charitable endeavors. Business career opportunities led Jim back to San Diego. At the same time, Jim met the love of his life, Dianne, on a blind date. They married the following year and were married for 49 years. Long known for his positive outlook, sense of humor and passion for living, Jim always included his friends in travel and sporting events. Having won a part in the show "Mama Mia" on Broadway, Jim took several of his friends to New York to watch his performance on Broadway. After watching the show, all agreed Jim should stick with his business endeavors in San Diego. Jim loved sports. If it was skiing in Aspen, attending USC football games or watching his horse win, each event brought great joy to Jim. One of his great thrills came in 2016 when his horse Danzing Candy led the Kentucky Derby for most of the race. Jim will always be remembered as a loving husband, a man of honor and a generous friend. A viewing will be held from 4:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Salli Lynn Chapel of Greenwood Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Ave., San Diego, CA. Jim's funeral service will be at 1:30 PM on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at The Village Community Presbyterian Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias, Rancho Santa Fe, CA, with his committal service to follow at Greenwood Memorial Park. ln lieu of flowers, Dianne would be honored by a gift to UCLA Department of Head and Neck Surgery or Father Joe's Villages.

I'm so glad I attended the services in RSF. It was quite moving, hearing about Jim's later life from 1992 on. I think often of the great times we all had together in RSF, LJ, Aspen and Snowmass, Washington DC and New Orleans. Now in my 80's I have begun to smell the flowers and enjoy the sunsets and starry nights. Please know Dianne, that I have always loved you both, and miss our great times together.

Am I incorrect that James is the cousin of Barbara Canterbury? No one in the family could find her - she worked for our father for over 30 years and I just found an obituary for her with your name - if so - we send you our heart felt condolences for the entire family. Carol Ward Dudley

My Dear Dianne,
I was so shocked tonight to read of Jim's passing about 18 days ago. I was thinking of the two of you about that time, as I often do, and by chance was browsing the net tonight. I'm so terribly sorry I have surely missed the services but of course I know of his ultimate earthly resting place, and in your heart. I loved Jim, and I am sorry I disappointed the both of you with my choices in life. Though I don't regret my choices, I was always regretful that we lost contact because of it. We had so many wonderful experiences together in the Ranch, fishing on your beach front in La Jolla, and our annual excursions to Snowmass, Aspen, Deer Valley. And yes, I always enjoyed our myriad black tie charity and La Chaine events, enjoying great wines and great things together and the Reagan inaugural festivities in 1981, then again in New Orleans at the Bush convention. Jim was a stalwart, a gentleman, an astute businessman, a great husband and my very dear friend. I hope you might make contact one day and we can reminisce and enjoy Jim's legacy.

Mr. Bashor became a client of mine when he ordered a multi-line telephone system from me for his home. I learned so much from him in the brief time we spent together, lessons that have stayed with me for the rest of my life. He expected nothing less than expert craftsmanship and without excuses. He was courteous but demanded professionalism. His appreciation for art and beauty was infectious.

I was so honored when Mr. Bashor asked me to stay in touch with him after I sold my company. Had I not been traveling continuously for the past seven years, I would have been grateful for the pleasure of phoning him from time to time.

Mrs. Bashor, I hope you will find the strength you need to cope with your loss. Please accept my deepest condolences.

I have worked with Jim since the late 60's as a subcontractor. He always had a very high standard and made us all better for it. Due to the work Jim provided, my father and I were able to start our business, which is continuing.
Jim was one of the people that has left many lasting impressions on me. He will be missed.
