James Kelleher Obituary

July 1, 1938 - April 12, 2016 J.D. Kelleher, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away in his home on April 12, 2016. JD was born July 1, 1938, in St. Louis, MO. After spending his childhood years there, the family moved to Los Angeles, where he made his home for the past 60 years. After graduating Cal State LA in 1962, he ventured into the real estate business. J.D. opened Los Feliz Properties in 1964 with a one-person staff and the business grew rapidly. During the 70s and 80s, under the J.D. Kelleher & Associates umbrella, he expanded the company to include offices in all 5 of the Southern California counties. As a long-time resident of the Los Feliz area, he operated his real estate and property management business from the company headquarters on Hillhurst Avenue. He received the California Realtor Forty Years Emeritus Award in 2007. J.D. was a man of many interests. In the early 70s, he entered law school, receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1976. As a real estate law specialist, he was often called upon to provide insight as an expert witness. His experience and expertise in all aspects of real estate made him a valuable asset to the court. He loved flying and piloted single- and multi-engine aircraft as well as helicopters. For 28 years, he was the President and CEO of Southland Aviation, where many aspiring pilots in the southland learned to fly. During his early 20s, J.D. served our country for 6 years in the US Navy, Special Forces, in Coronado, CA, and then Japan. While there, he taught English and received his 2nd degree Black Belt in Karate. Growing up, sports was a passion for JD. He was a successful basketball and baseball player. As a pitcher, he was particularly proud of the no-hitter he threw while playing for the Navy. As an adult, he enjoyed boating, horseback riding, playing tennis, and golf. J.D. was also a philanthropist, quietly and anonymously supporting the charities that were important to him. J.D. is survived by his sister, Joan Arlotto and her husband Michael; nieces Michele Arlotto Nelson and Julie Arlotto Ellis; nephew Michael Arlotto and their families.

I just learned this BAD NEWS of Jim's passing!

Jim was a family friend for many years, and was always fun at our family evening parties! He spoke to me about Real Estate and advised me that I was cut out for this line of work.

Soon thereafter I obtained my Real Estate License. I worked with Jim in Real Estate back in 1976-1977, and was one of his Top Agents, listing and selling everything from Cottages to Condominiums to Frank Lloyd Wright!

Because of Jim, I took Flight Lessons at his Flight School (Whiteman Airport) and the fun never stopped. He would me in his Twin Engine Piper Airplane on a trip to Catalina Island, and then back to his First Class Boat and so much more. It was always a Blast!

I took Jim for Drinks to Lawry's Restaurant the day he passed the State Bar, and we spoke heart-to-heart about his life. And I would emcee at his HUGE Holiday Parties. With my background in Psychology (up to my Master's Thesis from UCLA) I felt I contributed to his world.

Last I saw Jim was at a Top Depositor Dinner Engagement held by CitiBank (for all the Business Top Depositors at CitiBank). We sat next to each other and shared so many stories of our past. And we toasted to his health and future happiness!

I'll always miss Jim, he was truly one of the smartest people I have ever met in this detailed field of Real Estate.

Because of Jim's influence, my Company, Bruce Jay Associates, handles Sales, Loans and Property Management (as well as our Home Repair Company). We now Manage several hundred units.

I'm so glad that I was diligent in getting word to Jim-- to let him know that it was his influence that inspired my extreme success in my 40 ++ Year Real Estate Career.

Thank you, Jim, for being the remarkable man you always were, and for being just so damned BRILLIANT!!

I'll always miss you and remember you!

Bless you, now and forever,

Bruce Jay, GRI, CRS

I met JD playing tennis in Newport Beach, about eight years ago. I immediately enjoyed his playful sense of humor and loved his complete lack of arrogance, his kindness, intelligence and strong principles. Though our paths crossed all too briefly and late in the journey of our lives, the sweetness of his soul touched my heart. I am grateful for that. He was a special and unforgettable man. My thoughts and prayers go to his family for their loss. Gloria Mora, Laguna Niguel, Ca
