Joseph Devanney Obituary

Devanney, Joseph G.
Born March 12, 1923. Died May 17, 2006. Joe was born and raised in New York, a graduate from N.Y.U. Joe was a decorated World War II and Korean War Veteran. He retired from the army earning the rank of Major. Joe was very energetic, teaching his extension courses at U.C.L.A. up to the week before his death. He was always pushing the importance of a good strong education. Philanthropy was a large part of Joe's life, as he was involved with the Big Brothers of America, and the Vikings organization. The ultimate U.C.L.A. fan, Joe will be missed cheering for his beloved Bruins during football, and basketball season. It's said that you can die of a broken heart. After losing his wife Janet two months ago, and after being married for over 50 years, Joe's heart broke, and he is now with Janet. We will miss him, and carry on his spirit for life! A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 4, 2006 at the UCLA Faculty Center, 480 Charles E. Young Drive East, Los Angeles, California. In lieu of flowers, please submit any donations to the following: The Joseph Devanney Scholarship Fund, U.C.L.A. Extension, c/o the Dean's office 10995 Le Conte Suite 770 L.A., CA 90024 or to The Vikings Attn: Barry Lloyd 16781 Weyburn Ave. Yorba Linda, CA 92886.

I met Joe at an UCLA Extension course leading to a CFP. Joe was a passionate, caring, intelligent and perceptive person. Los Angeles will be the less for his passing.

Joe's infectious nature instantly drew one to him. He is admired for his courage, his intellectual pursuits and his delight in sharing his gifts with others. Knowing he is exactly where he wants to be somehow eases the sadness of missing him.

Although I have known Joe for a relatively short-time (two years), he certainly made a positive impression on me. He was so eager to assist others in anyway possible and shared what he knew with others in a most giving way. It was evident that he missed his wife and companion. Their relationship was something to envy.
