Being from near Cleveland, a member of AEPi, and a graduate of Kent State I had the honor of knowing Newt a little better when he taught my CPA review courses in LA in 1970/1971. Because of him and his course I passed the exam the first time and I can truly say that changed my live for the better.

To Rochelle and Mr. Newton Becker's family

It is hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were a special part of such a well-lived life.

May happy memories carry you through this sorrowful time. Take heart. Time will soften the edges and ease your burden. There are better times ahead.

“…when the student is ready, the teacher will appear,” and Newton “Newt” D. Becker first appeared to me in 1971 at the Becker CPA Review Course in Cleveland. Little did I know then that Newt would have a lifelong influence on me. And that influence was enormous. In addition to Newt helping me pass the CPA exam, he taught me how to learn, how to study and how to take a great deal of satisfaction in acquiring the technical aspects of my profession. He was a CPA-educator par excellence.

His approach to analyzing a topic, understanding the saliences of the topic and mastering the underlying theory was astonishing. His accounting and auditing mnemonics were legendary and stick with me to this day. His phraseology invited learning. I remember Newt beginning class with the watchwords: “…Okay…we'll start in now.”

Newt was strong in his life skills as well. And he conveyed those life skills to his students. I remember one admonition to “…get your homework done before the weekend,” with the weekend to be used for relaxation—something I never was able to accomplish, but greatly appreciated the encouragement.

My relationship with Newt continued on a professional basis after I passed the CPA exam. I was extremely proud that Newt was a fellow-alumnus of Kent State University. And I was joyous when Newt was recognized by Kent State with an honorary Doctorate degree and, enjoyed greatly those times when Newt would return to northeast Ohio to visit the Cleveland Becker classroom, attend events with friends and family, or homecoming at Kent State University.

To Rochelle and family: Newt will be forever missed, but not forgotten. There are over a half-a-million CPAs who are Becker CPA Review alumni. I know that God has a special place for Newt, as do all the other CPAs that were his students.

And to Newt: I know the next time we meet, I'll want you to tell me: “…Okay…we'll start in now.” May God bless you.

May Newt Rest in Peace. I delayed taking the CPA exam for about 3 years after graduating form the University of Oklahoma with a degree in accounting. Because of the delay, I was a bit rusty on all of the disciplines. Back in 1981 I lived in Denver, CO and fortunately, my employer at the time reimbursed me for the cost of the Newton Becker CPA Review course. With Newt's help, so many of us passed. Thank you so much. I feel I would have felt incomplete in my education had I not passed that exam, which I did due to his course.
I was studying after work one night with my friend and co-worker Dave, when we had trouble understanding what Newt was trying driving at on the subject of "Consolidated Goodwill". Since we were both auditors and quite young (mid 20's), we thought what the heck, let's track down Newt and call him. So we located his home phone # (that's right, he was listed in the phone book) and called him at home. Imagine our shock, when he actually answered the phone. We almost burst out laughing in surprise. It was obviously him as we had heard his distinct voice in class so many times.
Anyway, we will both be forever grateful for him not being perturbed and the fact that he was so pleasant and patient in answering our questions that night.
In my opinion, the CPA exam was not so much a test of what you actually knew, as it was more about how well you responded to taking a test under a pressure packed time constraint. Newt taught us how to manage our time during the test. Newt was the master at preparing all of us for that pressure packed 2 1/2 days. Thanks again, and may God bless you and your family.

I have always said that working with Newt was the best job I will ever have. He was a mentor and friend. As I continue to teach around the country, I am always asked by people who took his course but never met him, How is Newt? Whether they met him or not, they are on a first name basis with him. Responding to that question will now be much more difficult. My condolences to Rochelle, Brad, Bryan and the rest of the family.

I have known Newt since 1973 and he became a dear friend and mentor. I could have had a better one. Newt was a brilliant teacher and innovator. He helped thousands of CPA candidates become a CPA who more than likely not have passed the difficult CPA exam if they had not taken Becer CPA course. His learn & remember technique is still being used in Becker CPA course.

Every student knew that he cared about them. His charitable donations were enormous.

He has left a big footprint on this earth. He did it all with high core values and hard work ethic.

We all will miss him.

I have been an Instructor with the Becker CPA review course since 1978 and was always impressed with Newt's care and concern that the student always came first. It was Newt's concern for quality that makes the course successful. I was honored to know such a fine man and he will be missed by many.

I am a current Becker student and always said I would go through the course when I was ready to take the CPA. I would like to thank Newton Becker for creating a program to help others with passing the CPA. To his family you are in my prayers and take comfort in knowing he will forever live through Becker students past, present, and future for such a great program he left behind.

I attended Newt's course in 1983. A couple of classes were taught by him personally. This was 28 and a half years ago in Van Nuys. He had a larger than life energy and filled up the room with his presence. He will be missed. Prayers to his family.

Newt was one best educators of accounting – the format and content contained in his classroom lectures and study materials were the most effective ever (as evidenced by the hundreds of thousands of students who passed with his assistance). He did not limit his teaching to accounting, he was concerned for his students health as the study materials included lists of foods to eat and those to avoid, a recipe for mock ice-cream made with bananas, as well as diagrams of the digestive system along with why and how to include several tablespoons of millers bran in your daily diet.

I will always be thankful for what his program did for me personally and the students I was fortunate enough to teach his program to in Hartford and Springfield. I was also very fortunate to meet with Newt twice when he visited our region in 1994.

He was a wonderful man who will always be remembered for improving the lives of so many

I took the Becker Review some 35 years ago. I did not have an accounting
background or any particular knowledge of it. Not only Newt Beckers tapes, disicpline of homework and superior tutoring got me to pass the CPA exam on the first sitting but I came quite close to honorable mention.
I feel quite confident today of my knowledge of accounting - all because of
Newt Becker. To me he will always be somewhat of a legend.

I am celebrating the life of Newt with his dearest Cleveland friend Norman Diamond. Norm loves Newt. Norman has shared many incredible stories about his best friend. Although Norman could not be personally present today to honor and celebrate his dear friend's legacy, we are honoring Newt with special prayer services here in Cleveland.

May his beauty live on in your memories and bring you much peace.
