ROBERT 'BROPHY WAS A GENTLE SOUL CARING AND AMAZING. I WORKED AS HIS CAREGIVER FOR A SHORT TIME AT HIS HOME. HE TAUGHT ME HOW TO MAKE A DELIOUS SA DWICH THAT HIS DAUGHTER SAID WAS THE BEST. WE SHARED BI LICAL THOUGHT AND FAITH IN GOD. He left an impressive friendship to me and everyone around him. I was fortunate to meet him along life's journey. I pray the faith he had transferred to all his loved ones. Miss you Mr.Brophy! See you on the otherside.

Bob was an exceptional individual. As his obituary states, he was beloved by everyone who had the pleasure to meet him.
As an English major at CSULB, I met Bob through his friend Professor David Fine, who also taught in the English Department. From the moment I met Bob, I was impressed by his considerable intellect, writing and teaching abilities, vast knowledge of many subjects, as well as his social activism. Bob´s kindness and willingness to participate in social Justice and peace protests was highly admirable. I was fortunate enough to meet various persons (mainly consisting of ex-priests and nuns), many of whom had served prison sentences for their peaceful activism.
It was an enlightening experience to converse with Bob-guaranteed to leave one more knowledgeable than at the outset.
Bob wasn´t only an intellectual, teacher, writer, thinker, activist, and societally-engaged person. He loved his three children, and had a special relationship with his beloved dog Baxter, whom I was lucky enough to be entrusted with his care, when Bob traveled. Bob "spoiled" Baxter, but he was more than rewarded by the big black dog.
I oftentimes think about Bob: wishing we could talk about politics, international affairs, Catholicism (of which I was rather ignorant), and movies, music, and nature.
Bob´s dazzling smile, caring eyes, gentle humor, and kindness are never far from my mind. He was a rare human being of which we could dearly need during these tremulous times. Gosh, how I wish I could sit with him and discuss the current political goings-on. I know Bob would offer a well-thought out analysis of the situation, and ways to get involved. I have increased my activism in political and social matters. Bob is, and will always serve, as my inspiration to get involved and engage in some "good trouble."
Bob, I miss you. I love you. Every time I think about your beautiful, gentle gaze, I am reminded of your goodness, and how fortunate all of us were to have you in our lives. The world was, indeed, a better place for your having been in it. Your spirit is eternal through all of those whose lives you touched.
Thank you.

I often think of Mr. Brothy. I worked as his caregiver for short period of time. We had great conversations about the Bible. He was as a very kind person and loved everyone. I remember the great sandwiches we prepared and ate together. Blessings to his loved ones.

So sorry to hear of his death. I was his student, friend, and follower.

Though 12,300+ feet apart in elevation and a decade+ apart in time, look at the alignment here-of the bands of the waters on the ground and the rocks and clouds in the sky (of Lhasa, Tibet and Pfeiffer Beach, California). Though born decades apart, Bob and I were fratres, first aligning over the challenging literature of Jeffers, then continuing to challenge each other with questions about everything, which bonded us even more (even though our base beliefs didn´t always align). Oh, how I miss you, my brother. You had the fearless heart of a lion when fighting for the less fortunate, believing (like Jeffers) that "corruption / Never has been compulsory," that human agency has the power to redeem, to access the sublime (read: greatness beyond words and comprehension, as in the philosophy of aesthetics). And yet you were as gentle as the lamb in spirit and compassion, a pacifist who fought righteously for peace and justice. "Do I contradict myself? / Very well then I contradict myself," as another of our favorite poets put it. You were large. You contained multitudes. You changed the world and all who knew you for the better. What a legacy.
