I was stunned to hear of Mike's passing. He seemed to be one of those happy / healthy individuals who would live to be at least 100. I knew Mike as a classmate and friend through Jr. and Senior High Schools. Although I haven't had contact with him for a very long while, when I heard his name I immediately found myself, in my mind's eye, walking with him down the hallway of the 200 Building at Stanford Jr. High. He, all arms and legs and braces, tilting his head and using his whole body to talk in his amazingly animated way. I remember Mike as being so very full of life. I am sure it was a joy to have had Mike as a teacher. I was saddened to hear of the health issues he faced and I send my very best thoughts and wishes to his family and friends.

Words are never enough at a time like this, but know that you are in my thoughts.

I attended Millikan High School with Chris Hammer in the early 70's I really don't remember Mike except when Chris and I would sometimes hang out at her house. I've lived in Tucson, Arizona for the past 29 years and I do like to keep up with Long Beach news. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope you have many loving memories of your son, brother, uncle and friend.

"Hammer a nail, hammer a spike;
Nail your vote for Hammer, Mike!"
That grade school election diddy shall always ring in my mind as I fondly recall my long time childhood buddy, Mike. We shared many a childhood memory and times together - he played Bert to my Mr. Banks in the Emerson Elementary School 4th Grade play, "Mary Poppins". Singing duets to each other in that school play is now a treasured time but we could hardly keep from laughing at each other during the plays.
Mike also played a squeaky clarinet in our feeble attempts to begin a band outside grade school - John Moffat played guitar and sang, and I shook a horrible tambourine because playing a loud baritone horn just didn't fit in!
I always admired Mike's sweet and graceful moves to the basketball hoop while I threw bricks as a guard and he smoothly handled the rebounds for baskets.
He was my good friend - "sleep overs" at each others house were good times, and his mom made the best tacos of the time!
For me, Mike was always a bundle of energy and fun - our various twists of a magical childhood in Long Beach in the 1960s. Our early years in the LB YMCA Tigers and Thor clubs - Mike was always a leader and Club President. He got along well with everybody.
While our roads shifted gradually at Millikan High School and later years, the mere thought of my buddy Mike always brings a smile to my mind and peace to my soul.
I shall truly miss my friend. My deepest sympathies to the Hammer Family - Mike is one of the best!
