I just found out about Charlie by reading between the lines of his fathers Obituary. The line " survived by his sisters" thru me for a loop so I searched the LC Sun news obits and come upon all this. I am so sorry for your loss. Charlie and i were fast friends back in the day and I was at most of those gigs in his slide show. I met you one day a few yrs back at Lowes, i told you guys about John Hatch's passing, strange huh? Anyway, god bless your soul Charles Comer. You will be missed.

I am the director of "a nightmare in las cruces" which examines the bowling alley massacre from 1990. I contacted Charles at KRWG in Sept 2009 and he couldn't have been more kind and gracious. He allowed me permission to use KRWG file footage from that horrific day back on Feb 10, 1990. The documentary wouldn't have had the same impact if it wasn't for Charles' generosity and care for what is easily the worst day in Las Cruces history. Charles even asked questions for me in the film and made a solid appearance answering questions. I never met Charles, but never needed to realize what a kind and generous man he was. I grieve like everyone else at his sudden passing and send my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I had the honor and privilege to be Charles’ instructor at the community college many years ago. Charles came to class (it was an Intro to Computers class), not too sure of himself, with many questions about the direction his life should take. He was not too sure if this “college thing” was for him, but I encouraged him to give it a try, promising that I would help him every step of the way in the class. It didn’t take long before I noticed a spark in Charles’ eyes that wasn’t there before. As his confidence grew, and he became more secure in himself, he began to see possibilities for his life that he had never imagined before! He, of course, excelled in the class, and the rest, as they say, is history. He went on to advance his education and moved into a successful career.
After this, I followed his life from afar, catching glimpses as he would occasionally drop by the community college with an update, or with a casual conversation with his father, Winston. Our lives touched but one more time, recently, as Charles was able to assist the community college through our Community Education program. He was able to work part-time and fill a void to keep our Community Education program afloat. Although he was able to help but briefly, Charles’ ideas and plans were a welcome addition to the program.
I was saddened to hear about Charles passing, knowing the big void he would leave behind. But I rejoice that I was able to play but a small part in his life, igniting a spark, and providing a gentle nudge with encouragement and hope. Charles was and is a great human being.

Susan, may the Lord give you peace and strength. Sorry for your loss. Charles was very proud of you and Katherine in whom I never met but he always talked highly of. You two were what he lived for, that was his pride and joy. I have memories of him, he was not only a good guy, but a good friend, the perfect neighbor, and the most reliable smoking buddy.LOL. Our timing was perfect when it came time for our smoke break. We always shared conversations together in the back alley when we smoked our cigarettes. Cleo (my poodle) loved him, and so did my daughter Crystal. He gave them both lots of attention. Charles, my friend I will miss you greatly. Your friend Marty

Dearest Susan... I did not know Charles well, but I have such lovely memories of him as our neighbor. In our last conversation I was trying to lure out the last of a litter of feral kittens from under my house in order to find them homes. As a lure, I was using a fellow litter kitten and they were both singing and crying to each other. Charles could see and hear all this and was clearly concerned. Such a kind, gentle fellow, he also took on clearing the street debris from storm drains on our street after a rain. Susan, I was so moved reading his obituary, thank you for sharing his great and meaningful life. Jackie Mitchell

People didn’t just know Charles, or meet him- You experienced Charles. So full of life, energy and love for everything but especially Susan and Katherine. After talking with Charles, a smile was on your face, a skip to your walk, mostly not knowing why.
Charles was the proudest dad ever. When talking about Katherine, he’d end up speechless (Charles not having something to say?), but by the look on his face, you knew his daughter was exceptional.
And Susan, you will always be Charles’s everything. He spoke of playing Wii, seeing a movie, eating good food with you, traveling…to Charles, every moment the two of you had together was magical. He was “giddy”, in love!
how to say goodbye to Charles. you can’t.

After talking with Charles for only five or ten minutes about rock-n-roll, I would walk away feeling as if I had just been hooked up to a Starbucks espresso machine. The man was ON! He loved his rock music and it's only fitting that he was born on the same day as bassist Berry Oakley of the Allman Bros. Band, guitarist Dave Hill of Slade, and the great Muddy Waters.
Charles, I will always cherish having you as a journalism student, working with you at KRWG-FM, and knowing you as a friend. Rest in peace, my friend. You touched many, many lives and we are better people for having known you.

Charles and I were in the trenches for years. We have war stories, and those make for the strongest bonds. We weathered the very best and worst of times. Was he my friend? My student? My colleague? My brother? My mentor? All of those and more. He finished sentences in scripts that I could only start. He raged. He cried. He laughed. He sang. Smart. Quick. Hysterically witty. You knew when Charles was in the room. He lived life large and felt deeply. He was honest and courageous and sacriligious and spiritual. He has been taken too soon from us. I am so glad he had Susan who grew more beautiful every year I knew her. I know how proud he is of his daughter. And how much he missed his mother. How much he really loved music, and art, and PBS, and NPR, and ideas and living life. To Susan, thank you for this WONDERFUL site and unique ceremony you are planning for Charles. It could not be more perfect. If I cannot be there in person due to distance, I will be in spirit. Please set up the camera and roll tape. Much love from Gary

Dear Susan, I wish to express my deepest sorrow and condolences over your loss. It has taken me some time to come to terms with Charles passing. Charles was a good friend and when he left KRWG the place was never the same. He, Christian and I worked closely together on his show, on several projects at the station (he personally edited my fathers WWII story for "Our Stories" and the 3 of us would regularly go out and find a new place for lunch as well as visit Fidencio's at least 2-3 times a month. I regret that we did not see him more after he left but I understand. I will miss him dearly and I will always remember him, I hope he is one of the people waiting for me when it is time for me to go home. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this sad time and my memories of good times are with my Bro, Charles. God Bless you and help you through this difficult time. Ralph Escandon.

Susan,
May the warmth from friends and family surround you, and may you find some comfort in those reaching out to you and Katherine during this difficult time.
The words you have shared are beautiful. When I think of Charles, I smile. Through everything at KRWG, I always loved to watch his face light up when he talked about his family. He would tell many of us that worked with him how much he loved you, how much he loved his daughter, and how lucky he was because of you both.
When he did that, his face just lit up, something that is hard to describe, but anyone that knew him would know what I am talking about.
One of the things about Charles that I will never forget is that he cared. He cared about what he did/how he did it, and he cared about those he taught.
He genuinely cared about people.
He was a great teacher and friend to me, and even always went out of his way to say hello if he saw me walking by.
His memory will live on in so many ways, and it gives me peace to know that you and Katherine helped make his life rich in love.
