Diana Chavez Obituary

It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of Diana L. Chavez on March 3, 2016, after a difficult battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at age 60 at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Diana is preceded in death by her brother, James A. Martin; father, Robert L. Martin; and grandparents John and Goldie Fleer and James and Chris Martin. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Victor R. Chavez; her two children: Gabriel A. Chavez and Alicia R. Chavez; and her mother, Phyllis J. Martin.
Diana was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Robert and Phyllis Martin on April 6, 1955. Her family moved frequently during her father's service in the Navy, eventually settling in Las Cruces. She graduated from Mayfield High School in 1973. She had several jobs after graduating, including working at NMSU in the Physical Science Laboratory, Memorial Medical Center and Dollar General. She met her husband, Victor, while working at PSL and married him in March of 1987. She was a loving mother, and together they raised a son and daughter. She was passionate about many things; she enjoyed casino trips to Ruidoso, New Mexico, cheering on the local high school teams during the football season, helping abandoned animals, and eventually working to set up a donation program for food to the local animal shelter with the help of Dollar General. She dearly loved her two dogs Layla and Mishka and her cat Molly. She always had a smile on her face and was willing to help out anyone in need. She received a lot of support from her good friends Lauren, Amanda and the team at Dollar General, and she was loved dearly by those she considered second family, including Julio Alvarez and Cristal Cruz who helped her and her family during her passing.
For those who would like to attend, memorial services will be held at Holy Cross Church on Friday March 11, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. Memorial gifts in Diana's honor can be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 Montana Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005.
She has left behind so many who will miss her including her family, her brothers- and sisters-in-law, many nephews and nieces and their children. She has touched the lives of many people with love and she will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank Mesilla Valley Hospice for the excellent care they gave during her final days.

Alicia, Gabriel, and Victor, and Mrs. Martin,
My sincere condolences in the loss of Diana. She and my daughter Amanda became close friends, and I will always remember the stories Amanda would tell me about Diana, and their time at work, as well as the concert trips they took. She was taken from all of us much too soon. May God give you comfort in this time of sorrow, and may He also give you solace as you remember her with joy.
