Doug Nelson Obituary

"Remember me and smile, for it's better to forget than to remember me and cry."
-Dr. Seuss

Doug Nelson passed away on December 14, 2014 in New York City. Doug was born on May 26, 1971, in Dallas, Texas, to Leonard and Bonny (Fry) Nelson. He graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1987 and received his Bachelor's degree from Austin College. Doug earned his Master's degree from New Mexico State University in 1999.

Doug loved traveling and spent time abroad in Mexico, Europe and China. He spent two years in Bejing studying the Chinese language and culture. After settling in New York, Doug worked for Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank. He loved animals and enjoyed taking photos of the many dogs in Central Park and on the streets of New York. Doug had the most incredible voice and loved to sing. We will remember his laughter, big bear hugs and unforgettable smile.

He is survived by his father and mother, Leonard and Bonny; his sister, Hila; sister, Cheri, and her husband, Ward, and two nephews, Edward and Owen. The family held a celebration of life with close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dona Ana County Humane Society.

I just found out about Doug's passing in the Austin College summer 2015 magazine. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Nelson family. Doug and I were in Nancy, France together for our junior year abroad. He was always up for an adventure and could light up the room with his smile. Your family is in my prayers.

I'm so sad and sorry to learn about Doug's passing. I met him in NYC in April 2013 and we became fast friends. I knew him as a terrific guy who was searching and wanting to do more. He had a kind heart and I will miss him.
