Roger Smith Obituary

The Rev. Roger A. Smith, 98, of New Bethlehem, took his Savior's hand and went home to be with Jesus, on Wednesday morning, July 31, 2024.

Born in New Kensington on January 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Urban A. and Mary Viola "Ollie" (George) Smith.

He was married on August 7, 2010, to Bonnie Sue Heckathorn, and she preceded him in death on June 17, 2015.

He graduated from New Kensington High School in 1944. He then served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from 1944 to 1945.

He graduated from Taylor University with a bachelor's degree in 1951 as well as Drew University with a Master of Divinity in 1958.

From 1964 to 1994, the Rev. Smith served in extension ministries in Mississippi from Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served for over 58 years in the ministry. The last church he served was the Putneyville United Methodist Church.

He also had a love for music and enjoyed singing the old hymns. He was a member of the Walter W. Craig Post No. 354 of New Bethlehem American Legion and served as chaplain for many years.

He was the last of his immediate family. In addition to his parents and his wife, Roger was preceded in death by a sister, Esther M. Charlesworth; and three brothers, Byron Smith, Carmen Smith and William David Smith.

Visitation will be on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bud Davis and Pastor John Phillips co-officiating.

Immediately following the funeral service, the Walter W. Craig Post No. 354 of New Bethlehem American Legion will honor their fallen comrade.

Uncle Roger had family; although not by blood, but by love. He had been apart of our family since I can remember. Calls to him had went unanswered for over 2 years, we could only imagine that he was sick and could not return our calls or mail. We are very saddened to hear of his passing.

Roger Smith was a guest pastor at the Nortonville Methodist church in 1959.
After his sermon, a friend of mine went forward to kneel at the alter, that gave me the courage to do so as well. Roger and my pastor, Rev. Dick Unkenholz, counselled and prayed with me and I sense that was the step I needed to grow in my faith and response to our Lord Jesus. I had only short conversations with Roger over these past 50 plus years, but he remains an influence and a friend, some one I hope to meet again in heaven. Phil Lint

I had the pleasure of meeting Roger at the Christian Fellowship Church (in Fairmount City or Alcola Pa.) at the time Leon and Rachel Carrico were the pastor's. He was a guest pastor a few times. I wish his loved ones and Friends my Condolences and May the Good Lord Comfort them for their Loss.
