Columbia, SC- SSG. Almanita Latease Smith, 26, of 613 Heron Glen Drive, Columbia, SC formerly of Columbus, GA passed Thursday, August 16, 2012 in Columbia, SC.
Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. EST Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Benjamin McGruder, pastor, officiating. There will be no public viewing according to Taylor Funeral Home, Inc.
SSG. Smith was born May 25, 1986 in Tuskegee, AL to Thelma Smith of Columbus, GA and Harold Davis of Tuskegee, AL. She was a US Army veteran and was currently serving in the US Army Reserve. She lived in Columbus, GA for 19 years before relocating. She was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church and had received her Masters Degree in Education.
Survivors other than her parents include two brothers, Shamon Smith and Deon Foye; one sister, Samantha Weaver and a host of other relatives and friends.

It's funny how we first disagreed, but learned in the end we only wanted the best for are Soldiers. Are little small talks we had gave me insight even though I never told you. And for this I do wish I had the moment to tell you, that you was and always will be a beautiful and lovely woman. I know you are looking down on us with that lovely smile. The last time I saw you was during a Women Observance's Event in March 2011 at Fort Jackson. You sashayed in the room to a Beyonce song and owned it. I remember our conversation on training to standard and the passion you exuded when discussing your disappointment in training as we both out processed Fort Eustis and moved on to bigger things. I will always admire your ambition toward collegiate achievement. RIP Almanita

You will truly be missed. I remember us deploying as the first team for 15 months as the Casualty Team, your promotion, and reenlistment downrange. We would always take a moment to take a photo op with people. My prayers are with the family and you will be in our hearts forever.

Almanita was once and will always be My Soldier--I was devastated when I received the news! I mentored her, trained her for combat, drove her and her team 10 hours by van to ATL to board the plane to Iraq--they were my first team into Baghdad, and my first team to come home proud and accomplished. Months later, I marched the rest of the teams home. Almanita, your in GOD's Hands now---PEACE BE WITH YOU, REGULATOR!!

Word's cannot Express the way I feel. I am very heart broken and sad inside and out about this tragedy that has hit so close to home. I was a neighbor of Ms. Smith, but never knew her personally. Almanita was not only an aesthetically beautiful person, but someone who truly possessed an incredibly beautiful spirit as well. She was one of the most courageous and driven people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and sharing fun adolescent life experiences with. To say that she was a giving person is honestly an understatement, because she not only served her country, her subordinates and peers but her community and loved ones as well. Many will rightfully remember her for her accomplishments and stellar professional achievements. However, in addition to her well deserved status as a pillar within her community, I am especially proud to call her my cousin because of who she was: a woman who expressed love of all whom she came into contact with by offering a hand in any way she could.
