Columbus, Georgia - Doris Tyler Smith, 88, of Columbus, Georgia died on February 10, 2022 peacefully alongside close family in her home of more than 50 years.
Doris was born on June 17, 1933 in Columbus, Georgia, the daughter of Bascomb LaVance Tyler and Versie Smith Tyler. She married James "Jimmy" Gordon Smith while living in Gulfport, MS and had her first son, Gordon Gilbert Smith, while living in Gulfport.
Doris loved being at home, and though she had moved to Gulfport as a teenager, she longed to return to her hometown of Columbus, GA and she did just that! Once back in Columbus, her second son, Brian Vance Smith was born.
Family was everything to Doris. She was happiest while at her home, filled with the people she loved so deeply. She truly enjoyed cooking and keeping her home immaculate, which she affectionately referred to as "playing house." She was the matriarch of her family. She would say that she was surrounded by love. The truth is that the love she was surrounded by was the truest testament of the wonderful person she was. You couldn't help but to love her when you met her. She was humble and kind to everyone she met. While she loved all of her family deeply, her truest joy came from being "Mamaw" to her 6 grand and great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James G. Smith; and her father and mother, Bascomb L. and Versie S. Tyler.
Doris is survived by her sons; Gordon (Betty Jo) G. Smith and Brian (Charlotte) V. Smith; her 3 granddaughters; Casey (Michael) S. Rowan, Chelsea (Victor) S. Dropik, and Cassie (Lexi) L. Smith; and her 3 great-grandchildren; Daylin Rowan, Tyler Rowan, and James Dropik.
A small private family gathering was held to celebrate her life. Per her request she was cremated.
