November 19, 2018
Manchester, Georgia- James "Jimmy" Lanier, 89, of Manchester, GA, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018 at Columbus Hospice House.
Mr. Lanier was born in Warm Springs, GA to the late Marvin Wesley Lanier and Arelia Cole Lanier on April 8, 1929. Mr. Lanier was the owner and operator of Lanier Service Station in Manchester, which was supplied by Gulf Oil, Chevron, and Pure Oil. He was also a mechanic and worked as a Dodge Car Dealer. Mr. Lanier was well known in the community as a selfless and compassionate caregiver and friend. For many years, he would volunteer to take community members and widows of Manchester to doctor's appointments, the grocery store, etc. Mr. Lanier lived a Christian life and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manchester, another passion he actively pursued. Much more than a member of the church, he served as an usher, was a member of the Men's Bible Class, and was a handyman for the church. If anyone needed help or something needed to be fixed, Mr. Lanier was there and ready to help. He and his wife, Janette, lived in town with a creek running beside the house and into the front yard. This creek ran through a water wheel, the icon at which so many memories were made by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Juanita Garrett, and brother, Paul Lanier.
Mr. Lanier is survived by his wife, Janette Chapman Lanier; daughters, Sandra (John) Mallory of Woodland, GA and Janie (Don) Braddy of Manchester; brother, Jon (Linda) Lanier of Manchester; grandchildren, Bobby Bishop, Buffy (Cameron) Mitchell, Bart (Jessica) Key; great grandchildren, Trent Bishop, Trevor Bishop, McCall Michell, Lexi Mitchell, Reed Mitchell, Austin Key, and Charlee Anne Key; as well as other extended family.
Funeral services for Mr. Lanier will be held 2:00pm Friday, November 23, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, Manchester with Rev. Dan Dixon officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. Joe Harrington. A private interment will follow in Meriwether Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at church from 1:00 – 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Roosevelt Warm Springs Hospital Foundation, c/o Administration, P.O. Box 280 Warm Springs, GA.
