Richard Bicknell Obituary

Richard
Bicknell
August 10, 1959-
October 26, 2020
Columbus, GA- Richard Bicknell, beloved son, brother, artist, songwriter, Lost Angel and Shameless Lover, died peacefully at Columbus Hospice Monday night. He was 61. The Angels and the Lovers were just two of the bands he fronted in a decade-long career as a folk-country Atlanta-based musician that produced three records (Sometimes Blue, Mayflower and Baby Lightning) and countless memorable shows, both solo and opening for the likes of Elton John, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams.
Richard was born on August 10, 1959 in Augsburg, Germany to Major Richard Bicknell and Mary Regina Bicknell. He graduated from Pacelli High in Columbus in 1977 and The Atlanta College of Art in 1984.
He is survived by his parents, his sisters Mary Beth Cammon and Kathy Williams, his brothers Kevin Bicknell, Michael Bicknell and Scott Bicknell, his nephew Lyle Cammon (Emily), his niece Mary Margaret Thompson (Jonathan), and too many relatives, friends, bandmates and fans to list here. He will be missed.
Richard has asked that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Lost-N-Found Youth (Infy.org) an organization that helps gay, lesbian and transgender homeless youth.

I am late to offer my condolences here. I was gutted to hear of his death, when we'd chatted only a few weeks before, resurrecting our old characters, Sophie and Sadie... He was a true original, always finding ways to make himself heard and seen. So glad I got to see him Thanksgiving, 2018.

You were one of a kind Dickie! Atlanta music scene would never be the same; you started so many trends at the in town music clubs! Rest in Angst because you wouldn’t have it any other way!

Richard’s large sweet soul barely fit into his narrow body! I met him at Eddie’s Attic when I opened for Eric Taylor one night. He was so enthusiastic and open. He was a delightful musician who included me in one of his later gigs! He called me “Brooke” as he felt it suited me! I benefitted from having known him! Singing with him was a comfort zone!

I loved Richard dearly, he was the most hilarious, uninhibited free spirit I've had the pleasure to befriend, I will miss and think about him daily as I mourn his passing. Godspeed, our wonderful angel. It makes one almost long for death, to know such a beautiful soul awaits in heaven. I love you always, dearest one.
