Winston Smith T 1933-2007 OPELIKA, AL— Winston Smith T of Opelika, AL died on June 5, 2007. He was 74 at the time of his death. He was born in 1933 to Winston Smith T, Sr. and Edith McGranahan Smith T, he was the oldest of three children. In 1959, Mr. Smith T married Vera Dozier Swift of Columbus, GA. Together, they had five children, Vera Smith T Britton of Birmingham, AL, Edith Smith T Walker of Opelika, AL, Alma Swift Smith T of Opelika, AL, John Winston Smith T of Birmingham, AL, and Dozier Harris Smith T of Opelika, AL. Mr. Smith T was a life-long resident of Opelika, devoting his life to numerous religious and civic causes in the area. Mr. Smith T was graduated from Opelika High School (then known as Clift High School) and from Princeton University in 1955. Following two years in the US Army, Mr. Smith T joined the family building supply business where he would work for nearly fifty years. (The business is now operated by his son, Dozier) Mr. Smith T was a member of the Opelika School Board, serving as its chairman for ten years. He served on the board of the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, the Opelika Arts Association, the 1st Federal Savings and Loan Lee County, and the First National Bank of Opelika (now BancorpSouth). Mr. Smith T also served on the Alabama Historical Commission, the Lee County Chapter of the Salvation Army, and the East Alabama Museum. He and his family are life-long members of the First Presbyterian Church of Opelika, where he has served as Elder and Sunday school teacher for most of his adult life. He served as moderator of the Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley. Mr.Smith T is survived by his wife, five children, two sisters, Dr. Joanne Smith T of Opelika and Virginia Smith T Barnes of Clarksdale, MS, and soon to be thirteen grandchildren.
