James Griswold Obituary

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. - James B. Griswold of Wethersfield and Old Lyme, Conn., died Jan. 1, 2014, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall the day before his 90 birthday. He was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Manchester, Conn., to Hayden and Maude Griswold. He attended Manchester schools and entered the University of Connecticut in 1942, leaving for military service. Jim was a proud WWII veteran and a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. After the war ended, he married the love of his life and finished his UCONN degree in horticulture. Mr. Griswold managed several greenhouse ranges before taking a sales position with Cadwell & Jones, Inc. He spent 30 years as sales manager, retiring as vice president of the company in 1985. In retirement Mr. Griswold enjoyed his volunteer work at Avery Heights and as a League of Women Voters' tour guide at the Connecticut State Capitol for 16 years. He also loved traveling extensively and spending summers at Point O' Woods Beach where he served on the Board of Governors, planted his gardens, and above all enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Griswold was a 60 year member of the Rocky Hill Congregational Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, twice as chair, and headed several anniversary celebration committees. He also belonged to the South Lyme Chapel. Mr. Griswold was a past master of Stepney Lodge #133, an avid square dancer and cribbage player.

Mr. Griswold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lois Clark Griswold. In addition, he is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Cahoon (Gary) of Peterborough, and Cathy Riggs (George) of Wethersfield ; nine grandchildren Richard Cahoon (Sadie), Anne Marie Donovan (Ian), Matthew Cahoon (Carey), Luke Cahoon (Cate) and Alex Cahoon, all of New Hampshire; Rachel Cahoon Blaine (Seth) and Michael Cahoon from Massachusetts; Jeff Riggs from Washington, D.C. and Rebecca Rodriguez (Uri) from Atlanta, Ga., and 11 great-grandchildren. Also mourning the loss of their brother are Albert H. Griswold of Peabody, Mass., and Hayden L. Griswold, Jr. of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Cape Cod. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and long time devoted friends.

Funeral services will be in Rocky Hill, Conn., with burial in Wethersfield, Conn.
