I´ve heard it said that we have three types of friends in life: Friends for a Reason, Friends for a Season, and Friends for Life. I have many stories in my memory from my season with Mike, although as I think about it now, he certainly was all 3 .
Originally , Mike was someone I knew of , through the New England Trailer Sailor Club, that he was a member along with my sister Pam. All I really knew about him was that he had a Macgregor 26 , and he was a new member of the Cottage Park Yacht Club , which I had recently joined myself. So, one day I took it upon myself to introduce myself, and I drove my my dinghy , which Mike would later help me name the "Limo", along side his boat , and tapped on the side to draw him out of the cabin. We immediately hit it off, as we had much in common , having both recently separated from our wives. That same night , we both set off together aboard my sailboat , Windshifts , to see the fireworks display being lit off in Boston Harbor , for a pre 4th of July taping. As it turns out the pier we were moored off of caught fire from one of the fireworks ashes falling over us. Shortly thereafter, the Coast Guard showed up to clear us all out , and we struggled to pull up the anchor, as it was stuck on something , and there began one of the many adventures Mike and I would come to share together . There are far too many to share here, but for many years Mike was a true friend , who was always there when you needed someone , and we frequently drew from each other for support . I really believe that without Mike , I probably wouldn´t have begun the relationship that led to a new marriage and two beautiful daughters . Mike and I spent less time together after that , but I will always value my days messing around in boats with my buddy Mike.
