Stephen Black Obituary

Stephen Black

Dublin NH - Stephen A. Black, 78 of Dublin, NH, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, at Monadnock Community Hospital on July 2, 2023. He was born in Boston, MA on September 16, 1944, the son of the late Francis and Helen (Tupper) Black.

Raised in Wellesley, Steve attended Rivers School, Weston, MA and Cornell University. He enlisted in the Army and was deployed to Vietnam. Following his service, Steve went to work for the town of Wellesley and started his fire fighting career in 1969. Steve married Susan Bowen in 1970 and together started their family. He came up through the fire ranks and was promoted to Chief in 1981 as the youngest Fire Chief in the state of Massachusetts at the time. In 1992 the Blacks moved to Peterborough, NH where Steve took the position of Fire Chief until his retirement in 2002.

Steve was an avid outdoors-man, and the family enjoyed annual summer camping trips. In 2017, Steve and Susan completed a trip of a lifetime, driving to Alaska and back. Steve was a proud member of Kiwanis Club of Wellesley and Peterborough from 1981 to 2021.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Susan (Bowen) Black, Steve is survived by two sons, Christopher and wife Lisa (Lawn) of Peterborough NH, and Daniel of Irasburg, VT; grandchildren, Arianna Black-Henning of Columbus OH, Noah Black of Denver CO, and Micah Black of Burlington VT, all of whom he was extremely proud and supportive of, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his only brother, David Black.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday July 9th from 4 PM – 7 PM at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH. A private family burial will take place at a later time.

My heart is heavy learning of Steve's passing. I knew him through Kiwanis. He was the first to arrive and the last to leave setting up and breaking down the rummage sale. His shy smile will remain a fond memory. Chief now with his FD brothers George Brown and Jim Grant.

Chief,
You were one of the Great Chiefs I have had thr pleasure to deal with. You were fair to your personnel, and willing to listen to new ideas. You were an influential part of the Fire Service in the Monadnock Reagion. I am very sorry to hear of your passing. Please rest easy and be sure we will all take it from here in your memory.

Saddened to learn of Steve's passing.
I have fond memories of the Blacks and Fuller Brook Rd.
Danny, Chris, and Matt playing football in our backyard. Labor Day cookouts.
Steve was a strong, quiet, reserved man
