David Preston Obituary

David Preston
November 17, 1933 - March 26, 2024
David Preston, age 90, of Essex, Connecticut, died peacefully in Essex on March 26th, 2024. Dave was born on November 17, 1933, in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of Roger and Anita Preston of Waban, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his brothers, Peter, Fred, and Phil.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Barbara Biddulph Preston, his son, Christopher Preston, his daughter Elizabeth Preston Miramon, and their spouses Elizabeth Valalik and Peter Miramon, and three grandchildren Carly and Emily Preston and Benjamin Miramon.
Also surviving Dave are his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Carl and Susan Biddulph, Hannah and Larry Crutcher, and Granthia Preston, as well as five nieces and nephews.
Dave attended the Rivers School, graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1951, and Cornell University in 1955 where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Society. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University in 1963.
Dave began his business career in the paper industry as a "peddler" with S.D. Warren in Maine and the H. M. Gousha Company in New York. In 1975 he purchased Scott & Daniells Inc., a manufacturer of folding cartons in Portland, Connecticut. He acquired Custom Carton in Branford, Connecticut in 1992 and set up a new manufacturing facility in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1996. Dave sold the business to Pharmagraphics in 1999 and retired in 2002.
Dave called Squam Lake in Holderness, New Hampshire, his home. He spent nearly 90 summers on the lake listening to the loons, enjoying lake activities, and hiking in the White Mountains. As a teenager, he spent one summer working as a "hutsman" for the Appalachian Mountain Club.
His enjoyment of skiing matched his love of hiking. He was a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. Dave enjoyed finding fresh powder and yodeling as he carved turns down mountains in New England, the West, and Europe. His adventurous spirit took him and Barbara to many continents, exploring on foot or bike, hiking over passes, and overnighting in refugios.
Dave's volunteer interests were primarily in education and land conservation in the communities where he worked and lived. He served on the boards of the Connecticut Nature Conservancy, Cooper Instrument Corporation, Middlesex Hospital, Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, Middlesex County Community Foundation, Old Lyme Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library, and Service Corps of Retired Executives. In 2003 Dave received the Middlesex County Distinguished Service Award from the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce.
He served as a Board Trustee for Deerfield Academy and the Williams School in New London, Connecticut. Dave was an Overseer at Colby College and Chaired the college's Parents Association. He was a member of the Old Lyme Beach Club, Old Lyme Country Club, and the Essex Yacht Club.
The family thanks the Essex Meadows Health Center staff for the wonderful care they gave Dave.
The date for the memorial service, a celebration of Dave's life, will be forthcoming. Instead of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in Dave's name to the Essex Meadows Employee Appreciation Fund or the Squam Lakes Conservation Society.

Preston Family. Hard to believe that it has been just over one year since Dave´s passing. Dave Preston was one of the most influential people in my life and any success I have had in business and also in my personal life, was because of the impact he had on me. Dave along with John Scott who he bought the company from, were my mentors, teachers and key holders to my life. Forever grateful and think about them often.

When I worked in Deerfield's Development Office, Dave was among the most frequent visitors as he was 51's Class Agent for many years. It is hard to visual Dave without a smile on his face; a truly wonderful man.

My condolences to the entire Preston circle inner and outer. Dave was a fine man and great leader. Like Bill and Frank I also was a 20 year ++ employee and friend. It was Mr. Preston who actually gave me my first bigger job as a plant manager. Shortly there after I was awarded the vice president of operations role and have remained an executive management and have thrived ever cents. Dave gave me the opportunity and allowed me to run with it for that I will be eternally grateful, may you rest and be safe and remember one of your famous statements the boss might not always be right but the boss is always the boss. I can promise the family. He is laughing right now sincerely Bob Papa.

My condolences to the entire Preston family and circle of close friends. I worked for Dave for 27 years at "Sco-Dan" as we called it. He was a great businessman, leader, mentor and always made you feel comfortable when talking to him. He gave me an opportunity in the folding carton business that enabled me to have a great career and one that I am still in. Dave was funny, smart, focused and easy to follow, for all of us who reported to him. Often think of him and proudly talk of him when I am talking " folding cartons" . Thanks Dave for giving me the opportunities you did, years ago.

My condolences to Barb, Chris, and Liz. As our family was fortunate to be able to spend time with the Preston family at Squam, my memory of Dave is his warm smile, a genuine interest in others, and his kindness and generosity. And I think he wanted to make sure you would be having as good a time as he was at Squam, playing tennis, swimming, whatever the case may be. He was a genuine human being.

I say that we are family as Dave and Barb took us in as part of their Squam family (in addition the Cutlers and Prestons have a long special history together). I picture Dave enjoying his swim off the dock, a toot out in his sailboat and lunch on the dock. Dry land included picking blueberries! Dave was the kindest, gentlest and most interesting person to spend time with. His picture brought tears and memories of how special he was. My best to Barb, Chris and Liz. Donna Cutler Jones

Dave was a nice person to work for. He always treated his employees well. Judy and myself ran the shop picnics for Mr. Preston and he was always right there asking how much we needed. I often think of him and wondering how he was doing. my condolences to the family the world lost a good man
