Abdallah Najjar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 11, 2017.
Dr. Abdallah Edward Najjar, 95, passed on October 4, 2017. His wife of 69 years, Geraldine Blankenship Najjar, passed 3 days earlier, on October 1, 2017. Also preceding him in death are his Stepmother, Zahia Najjar; Daughter, Lila; and Brothers Fred Najjar and Sam Najjar.
He is survived by three sons, Alan (Donna) of Buford, GA, Omar (Kim), of Stone Mountain GA, and Mark (Laura) of Cumming, GA; five grandchildren, Jessica Kubat (Jamie) of Birmingham, AL, Jeff Najjar of Miami, FL, Patrick Najjar of Athens, GA, Joseph Najjar (Jade) of Fayetteville, AR, and Claire Najjar of Athens, GA; Sisters Samira Bird (Ed) of Brewster, NY and Sara Najjar Wilson (Robert) Reston, VA; and brother Ali Najjar of Williamsburg, VA.

He was born in the mountain village of Baakline, Lebanon to naturalized American parents, the late Asaad Edward and Adibeh Najjar. After completing his studies at the American University of Beirut he was drafted to military service during WW II. He served in the US Army 3rd and 9th Divisions in France and Germany. Following his military service he and his brothers purchased a restaurant in Mullens, WV. Shortly thereafter, he entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he completed graduate studies in Public Health.

Dr. Najjar dedicated his life to serving others. Assignments with the U.S. Agency for International Development (US AID) and the United States Public Health Service took him and his family around the world, where he worked to control the spread of malaria and other infectious diseases. In 1964, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he established the Office of International Services at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
He remained active in his retirement years serving many educational, cultural, and charitable organizations, including the American Druze Society, the American Druze Foundation, the Alif Institute, and the Kiwanis Club.

A memorial service will be held on November 12, 2017 at 2:00, Floral Hills Funeral Home, Tucker, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Dear Omar, Alan, Mark and Family,

Uncle Abdullah and Aunt Gerri lived extraordinary lives during epic times in history. They will be missed here, but they are together again. Little can be said to ease the sadness of losing both parents almost at once, but the memories and legacies of them will last longer than their lives here on Earth. May God's will and presence be forever with you all.

Our sincere love and condolances,
Richard, Elizabeth and Christian Najjar

Amou Abdallah and Aunt Gerri were the pillars of our family and we are crestfallen by their loss this fall. We were so fortunate to have an uncle who left his village in Lebanon to forge a new life in the United States, serving his country both in the military and with the United States Public Health Service. He was a passionate defender of immigrants, those who were being oppressed around the world, and of his own people back home. He taught us the value of hard work, love of country, love of ancestry, and most importantly, love of family and friends. My father Jamil and mother Samia loved Amou Abdallah and Aunt Gerri and had a deep respect for them for how they raised their sons Omar, Alan, and Mark. With their loss comes a great grief in our family, but we are heartened by the fact that we were loved by two of the most extraordinary people anyone could have known. Amou Abdallah was a great mentor to me and I will forever be in his debt.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of both of your parents within days of one another. We were in the Mariners Sunday School Class at OGUMC with them and they always entertained us with their banter. They were a fun loving devoted couple. Our sincere sympathy on your loss.

Dear Alan and Omar Abdellah Najjar: Peace, hope and condolences to all of you. My name is Dr. Ahmed Abdul Moen. I have been blessed to be one of the first Ethiopians and colleagues of Dr. Najjar. Dr. Najjar was one of the first USAID/ETHIOPIA MALARIA CONTROL PROJECT Founders in 1956-1960. He was a very dear mentor for me as a student at the American University of Beirut. He introduced me to his family in Baabda Lebanon. I have his book on the Duruz history and I was proud of his contribution to the Duruz history and he seervice for the Arab American causes every time he calls or writes me. I have been in touch with him for the past 40 years in USA. He has helped me during my studies the University of Michigan and the Johns Hopkins University. As a member of the American Public Health he look for me first and foremost as his mentee even before he visited some of his relatives in Virginia. I would like to attend his memorial service on 11/12/2017. I know he has has relative in Virginia Fairfax and I could not find their address. I need to know if I can get his children number [Alan or Omar]. My Allah bless his soul. In the name of Allah the most Compassionate the Most Merciful.

We were privileged to have Dr. Abdullah and Gerri in our presence in late 1992 and my promise to see Them in January 2018 is no longer in my grasp. I have revered this man for his teachings and the open views he share with us all in his numerous contributions and writings in Al -Fajr. One must learn the true Unitarian (Mouwahideen) way of life he portrayed during his presence with his family and the wider community. I have valued his teachings from afar and may god bless both Gerri and Adbullah in their new journey of the hereafter. Our Sincere condolences to Sara, Robert, their boys and their families.
