Alexander Varga

Varga, Alexander CATSKILL Alexander Varga, C.P.A., age 77, of Vedder Road, Catskill, died Monday, February 2, 2009 at Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was born August 3, 1931 in Manhattan, N.Y.C., N.Y., the son of the late Louis and Maria (Sulla) Varga. Alexander's mother died at an early age and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Katalin (Nadassy) Varga. Alexander was a graduate of St. Patrick's Academy in Catskill; A.A. - Albany Business College, class of 1950; B.B.A. - Magna Cum Laude, Siena College, class of 1956; M.B.A. - Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, class of 1958. Alexander served in the United States Army. He became a certified public accountant in 1960. Mr. Varga owned and operated Alexander Varga and Co., Certified Public Accountants in Catskill. He was a former professor of accounting and finance at Siena College, SUNY Albany and Columbia University in N.Y.C. Alexander was also guest lecturer at St. John's University in N.Y.C. He was a longtime member and former board of director at the Catskill Country Club. Alexander owned and operated the Bottle Shop in Catskill. Mr. Varga was predeceased by two brothers, Julian Varga in 1973 and Francis Varga in 1988. Mr. Varga is survived by his wife, Mrs. Diane (Lockwood) Varga of Catskill; a sister-in-law, Katalin Varga; a nephew, Paul Varga; nieces, Gabriella Varga, Alexandra Varga, Emese Varga; a brother-in-law, George Lockwood; a niece, Darlene (Powers) Symons; and longtime business associate of 32 years, Anthony "Chip" Scalzo. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Town of Catskill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Siena College, Catskill Ambulance Service or the charity of one's choice.
