On Sunday morning, December 16, 2018, Alphonsus Gerard Brady, known as Gerry to friends and family, passed away surrounded by family at St. Joseph's Hospital in Thunder Bay, closing the final chapter in a long struggle with cancer that started in 2015. Born on March 28, 1950 in Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland, the youngest of 5 children Gerry emigrated as a young man to Canada, initially working with his Aunt Rose at a farm in Quebec. After moving to Thunder Bay and initially working as a salesman in a clothing store where he met his future wife, Gerry began work as a Millwright with Great Lakes Paper Company where he would work the next many years, retiring in 2006. Gerry was an avid musician, loved woodworking and was a skilled and talented handyman. In his later years he was very fond of spending time with his companion Phyllis Kivari (Phyl) He enjoyed attending weekly music sessions held by Castlegreen. Some of his fondest memories included spending time with family in Europe and visited them whenever possible. As his illness took a deeper hold, Gerry greatly appreciated the care and compassion he was given by Dr. Simpson & Dr. Sicheri. Their work gave Gerry nearly three years to enjoy with his friends and family before his journey met its inevitable end. Gerry is survived by his children Elizabeth (Chris), Colin and Sean, his former wife and still close friend Jocelyn (Leona), his companion Phyllis Kivari, his father-in-law Jim Pylypiw and his sisters in Europe; Majella, Helen, Ann and Jackie. His sharp wit, long smile and frequent laugh will be deeply missed by all of them. A celebration of life will be held a later date to be announced in the spring. The Brady and Pylypiw families wish to express their appreciation to the staff at St. Joseph's Care Group who looked after Gerry in his final days, who said it was the best care he had ever received in a hospital. We also wish to thank Vinny and his staff at the Shoppers Drugmart on Red River Road who provided much needed help and insights with Gerry's medication needs. Finally, we extend our deepest thanks to all of those who have called and written with notes of sympathy and caring. We are forever grateful for your thoughtfulness. In lieu of flowers, the Family would appreciate donations to a charity of your choice in his memory.

Sad to hear of Gerry's passing. He was a teenage friend of mine when we were both in St. Mary's Accordion Band in Derry. Glad to hear he kept up his interest in music. Gerry's father was also my gran's cousin. My heartfelt condolences to his family
