Very sorry to hear about Andy. He was a few years ahead of me at Carleton but I remember him both well and fondly. He was a role model for us young guys on the football team. My sincere condolences to his family. You are all in our prayers.

It has been around twenty-five years since I last spoke with Andy, but I remember him vividly as a genuinely nice, honest and dependable guy. The world is a poorer place with his absence.

When I heard of Andy's death, I was literally speechless. Knowing Andy from high school, he was one of those personalities that always came across as unflappable and indestructible. Days later I still am trying to find the right words. I find some comfort in the fact that my memories are always of a man with a soft smile and a dry wit. No question he left the world a better place.

So sad to hear of Andy's death. Just a year older at STA but still one of the South Minneapolis contingent, I enjoyed Andy's company during my time in high school and the handful of times we ran into each other over the past 30 years or so. He was a good, trustworthy guy with a heart of gold and a lot of integrity. My prayers and sympathies to his immediate and extended family.

Kathy,

As you know better than anyone, Andy truly was a wonderful person. I am terribly sorry that he is no longer with us, at least on this Earth. Coach Sullivan got it right: Thank God for Andy Engel.

Dear Kathy, Rachel, Thomas, Jack, Peter -
I hope you find strength during this very difficult time. I first met Andy when he started at The Leuthold Group 26 years ago. We crossed paths several times since. He was always so friendly and good natured. My father spoke highly of Andy. He will be deeply missed on so many levels by so many people.

My sincere condolences to this shocking news. I last saw Andy and met Kathy at a grade school event in Eden Prairie, but fondly remember playing football "in the middle" on defense with Andy at Carleton years ago.

Dear Kathy and family, Andy was my football teammate at Carleton my freshman year, when he was a senior. I played alongside him on the D-line. We lacked a coach that year, so Andy was a player-coach who put us through our paces. He was a wonderful guy and a great leader.
When we watched films after games, Andy would often be seen making tackles far down field; Coach Sullivan would rewind the film a dozen times and make us watch his angle of pursuit. "That's how it's done. A game saving tackle", Sully would exclaim. Then he said "Thank God for Andy Engel!" I believe it was Dave Sheehan who turned it into a longer prayer that would be recited at practice during warmups, "Thank God for the birds, Thank God for the trees, Thank God for Sun, Thank God for the bees. Thank God for Andy Engel!"
Although I hadn't seen him in over 25 years, he had a positive affect on my life. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Nearly every time we watched game films, Coach Sullivan would exclaim, "Thank God for Andy Engel." It became a real catchphrase. I think we all knew these words applied to more than just football. Miss you Andy.
