Andrew Hudak Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2023.
Andy Hudak, age 78, of Boston, passed away on June 25 surrounded by his loved ones after a battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; caring brother and uncle; and a dear friend to many.

Andy grew up in Middlesex, New Jersey, and spent most of his adult life in Boston. Andy met the love of his life, Doris, at student council camp at the ripe age of 17 and they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary the day before his passing. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1967, serving most of his time on the USS Albany, and received his professional degree in architecture from Harvard's Graduate School of Design in 1975.

Family was of the utmost importance to Andy and he began his architectural career as a solo entrepreneur in order to help raise his daughters, Neva and Jean. At a time when many men focused solely on their careers, Andy spent his days with his girls at Moms & Tots swim lessons and feeding the ducks at Larz Anderson Park.

Andy served as Deputy Director of the City of Boston's Public Facilities Department for 13 years, retiring in 2008. He was committed to excellence in public buildings and he was adamant that everyone deserves access to high-quality public buildings. During his tenure, Andy oversaw the construction of many noteworthy projects, including the Mattapan and Allston libraries and the Orchard Garden School.

Andy was a true Renaissance man: gardener, artist, handyman, wine enthusiast, cook, and baker. He loved traveling, listening to music, reading mystery novels, playing with his grandchildren, relaxing at the beach, and completing the New York Times Mini Crossword faster than Doris.

Andy especially enjoyed walking in the Arnold Arboretum. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Arboretum in his memory or stroll among the trees and think of him.

He will be sorely missed.

Today (2 Feb 24) Tom and I were having lunch at our favorite deli when a song came on the radio....The Age of Aquarius....Tom asked if I had ever seen Hair....I said yes....Doris Corbo and I went to see the stage play in downtown Jacksonville back in early 70s. Once we got home, I googled Andy Hudak just to check up on him out of curiosity....his obit popped up. We´re so sad to hear of his passing. From my memories, Andy was the most handsome, squared away young Naval officer ever on this earth....coulda been a poster boy!! We have many happy memories of both Doris and Andy in our young lives in Boston/Jacksonville on the USS Albany. Blessing on you, Doris, Neva, Jean, as you navigate your new normal of life without Andy....it isn´t easy, but you have many wonderful memories of a life well lived. Love and hugs, Tom and Pam Sanny

So sad to hear this news. Andy (also know as in-the-rack-Hudak because he liked his sleep time) was a true mentor and friend to me. As a boot ensign I was assigned to work for him on Albany. He taught me how to be a division officer and so much more. I remember sending hours on the mid watch with him talking about how to make a chocolate soufflé. I am truly saddened by his passing. Thought I had already shared this.
In more than 40 years employed in various government positions I worked with many people and Andy Hudak was absolutely at the top as the most professional, intelligent , proficient and respectful .
We became more than co workers and shared many times together with fellow co workers and friends.

I was so sad and sorry to hear of his passing. He left the world and certainly the City of Boston a better place.

Our condolences to Doris, his family and friends.

Thank you for that beautiful photograph. It rushes Andy full on into our hearts. We see you! We see you, Andy! Hear your gentle, warm laugh. See you at the cutting board and the table. With you loving and beloved family.

And of course we walk everyday here through your thoughtfulness. As the archtect that guided us through the restoration of our home which had been gutted by fire before we bought it. You listened. Listened quietly. Asked me for photos of rooms that inspired. I showed you a picture from a children's book. A scandanavian childhood loft room! And...well what do you know. Your design involved breaking through the ceiling to create a small house of a room with a pitched ceiling! It's magical.

Was that one of your finest qualities? One that made you so beloved inside and outside your family? In the radiance of that photo I see all you reflect back from having taken in. Such a gift to all whose lives you graced. Namaste Andy .

Prayers and condolences to Andy´s family, in particular his wife Doris. Andy was a devoted man. Devoted to his wife and daughters and to his work. He was a beautiful Light and left the world a better place for having been here. He will be missed.
I have fond memories of time shared on the beach st Martha´s Vinyard where he and his family vacationed.
