Anne Hart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2023.
Anne Hammond Hart passed away on April 11, 2023, after a brave two-year battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, William "Bill" McNaughton Hart, their daughter Christine "Chrissie" Hart Clay (Harrison), and grandsons Penn, Carter, and Lyle Clay. She is also survived by her younger sisters Susan Hammond Wampler (Atlee) and Christine Hammond Rollins (Ray) and their families, as well as her sister-in-law Linda Hart and her family.

Marian Anne Hammond was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 3, 1942, to Thomas J. and Marian Z. Hammond. She grew up in Grosse Pointe and attended its schools. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1960 and attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1964 with a major in Foreign Languages. While at the university she joined the sorority Alpha Phi. Anne's facility in languages piqued her interest in studying and traveling abroad. After college, Anne became a buyer for Jacobson's Department Stores in Michigan.

In 1961, Anne made her debut in Grosse Pointe and it was there she met Bill. They were married on July 30, 1966. Anne and Bill first lived in Ann Arbor and then moved to Newport News, Virginia, where they resided for nearly 50 years and built a beautiful, full life together surrounded by a loving and close-knit group of friends. Anne worked as an accountant/bookkeeper, first at the Betti Paige Shoppe in Newport News and later at R. Bryant Ltd. in Williamsburg. Anne was known amongst her friends as a master organizer, as well as a wickedly good but kind and encouraging bridge player. She was a member of the Hampton Roads Garden Club and the Junior League of Hampton Roads. Anne was also a talented cook and avid gardener.

In 2015, Anne & Bill moved from Newport News to the Chamberlin in Hampton where they enjoyed the beautiful views, good friends, and daily activities. In 2021, they relocated to Redondo Beach, California to be closer to their daughter and grandsons. Anne enjoyed a year of good health in California when her cancer was in remission and filled her days with bridge, grandchildren's games, and performances and outings with her new friends at their assisted living facility. She was also steadfast in her care and support for her husband Bill. She was a loving and proud wife, mother, and grandmother. A memorial is being planned in Newport News for early June.

I truly miss Anne- her quick witted humor always made working out a real joy! I could always count on her to bring her "A" game! There is no doubt she challenged everyone around her to go for it! I will think of her every time I do her favorite exercises !

Love & Prayers,

Dear Chrissie,
It was with deep sadness that we learned this week of your dear mother's passing. Judy and I extend our heartfelt condolences to you, your dad Bill, and your sons...each of whom brought such joy and meaning to Anne's life. To us, Anne and Bill were "ideal neighbors"...never prying but always there when you needed them. Their special friendship is lasting and will always be treasured.
We are holding you in our thoughts and prayers as we pray you are being sustained in a powerful way at this time by God's loving grace .

Rob and I have fond memories of Anne through the many years we knew here. She had many friends who loved her including us. My heart is warmed knowing she spent the last year close to her family, she adored those grandboys. Our thoughts and prayers are with all her family.
