Anthony "Popeye" Melito, born Sept 2, 1928, departed this life November 7, 2014 in Pueblo. Popeye had been residing at the Villa Pueblo since March 2007 prior to his death. Tony served 4 years in the Korean War in the US Navy on a battleship. He was preceded in death by his loving mother Louise Mae Caphone Fair Melito, siblings Lucy Fair Vadnel, Fred Fair, Adolph Fair, John Fair, Medal of Honor recipient James (Mary) Melito, Elizabeth Melito Marcelja, and Kathryn Mae Melito VanderValk. He is survived by his nephew Gordon (Becky) VanderValk, niece Sheilah (Mark) VanderValk Whitlock both of Pueblo, niece Barbara Vadnel Brandt, and nephew Kenneth Vadnel both of Phoenix, AZ. Tony also had numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Tony was a hard worker who retired from the Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) after 40 years in the Tube Mill. They all knew him as "Popeye". He was devoted to his mother and siblings. Tony loved fishing, Christmas Holidays, and his Denver Broncos. He was an avid member of St. Therese Catholic Church. Anthony believed in a strong family, even though he didn't have one of his own, he had all of us! He will be greatly missed. John Rodriguez- I was surprised to hear about Tony's passing this am. I am glad he is with the Father now, finally at peace probably cutting the grass at heavens door or saying hello to everyone in his quick fast paced style he always had. I was his next door neighbor along with my sister Janelle Snyder and my family. I will always remember the care he took to mowing the lawn or painting his green and white house, always the whitest of white and greenest of greens... My brother, Janelle and myself always remembered how fast Tony could hand cut the grass edging around his sprinklers and as we grew up with grass to mow it often became a race to us kids to cut the edging with hand clippers "as fast as Tony could to do it" . Tony was a machine and how he could cut the grass around his sprinklers using a hand clipper was beyond amazing. I would put Tony against a gas powered weed eater any day. haha! I will always remember his kindness both as we were children and as we grew up. I would often run to city park to train for cross country and I would run into him and his dog walking.

Thank you for the great memories Tony and Thank you for always remembering us kids at Christmas. Your arrival to our home on Christmas Eve was second only to Santa. :)
God Bless you!

To Tony's family: I guess my 3 siblings and I could say we were his "adopted kids." I was Tony's neighbor when he lived on Princeton many years ago. I remember his mother too. I was a child, but remember him well. If you are standing and facing his home on Princeton St. in Sunset Park, I lived in the house on the right. My parents were John and Louise Rodriguez. I am Janelle. I remember riding my tricycle up and down his driveway, and he always sat in a chair outside of his house. Sometimes he offered us gum or candy. He was always so nice. It was sad when he moved away, because we all adored him. Even after he moved, he still came by to visit us for Christmas for many years. Tony always gave us "Christmas envelopes" filled with dollars for myself and my three other siblings." We always looked forward to Tony's visit. We always had a present for him. My dad always shopped for Tony's "Christmas socks." It became an argument of Tony saying he didn't need a gift and always saying no,no it was ok he didn't need a gift, but my father insisted, eventually my father won and Tony took the socks. I had good memories of Tony and am blessed to have those wonderful memories for the rest of my life. I just wanted to share with you how he touched my life. Rest in peace Tony. You were loved by all. Sincerely, Janelle Snyder, [email protected] Littleton CO
