He earned his pilot wings and became a fighter pilot where he honorably served 29 years including a combat tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon retirement he was hired by Vince Dooley in the UGA Athletic Department as an Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities. He oversaw the massive expansion of UGA Athletics and played the pivotal role to hosting the 1996 Olympic Games in Athens. He was past President of the Rotary Club in Athens. Upon his second retirement, he enjoyed tending to his vineyard and making wine in his beloved Oconee County.

Col Cushenberry fondly known to his friends as "the Crusher" . We the USAF flyers spent time as roommates Kunsan Korea. I respected and loved this great warrior the sprint of a fighter pilot USAF who also loved his faith. I will try to have a Catholic Mass at our great fighter base Kunsan said for Tony and his family someone I will never forget as the best of the best. I am sorry the Cushenberry family I just learned today of Tony´s passing.

Liz and I offer our sincere condolence to Marie and the family. Another of my life long heroes has flown West for sure. I had the honor and privilege of being awarded a "pilot slot" and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the USAF by Col. Crusher. My lifelong ambition to become a USAF Pilot and Airline Pilot I owe to this great American HERO! He was truly a inspiration to the man I hoped to become in life! CAVU COL. CRUSHER!

Colonel Cushenberry was an inspirational leader and team builder. During my time in AFROTC at UGA, he expected your best and knew how to get the best out of you. He and his team at Det. 160 built many future leaders in the AFROTC program. He certainly helped me become a leader and imparted skills I still use today. Rest in peace, Crusher.
