Anu Gadhia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2025.
Anu Gadhia (née Jhaveri), age 85, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, in Bethesda, Maryland.

Born on March 2, 1940, in India, Anu's life was marked by a deep commitment to learning, service, and spiritual exploration. She pursued her academic interests in sociology at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai before continuing her graduate education at the University of Maryland in College Park. Her intellectual curiosity and dedication to public service led her to a distinguished career as an executive with the government of the City of Baltimore.

Anu brought grace and excellence to every aspect of her life. Whether navigating the complexities of municipal governance or sharing a quiet moment with family and friends, she carried herself with elegance, dignity, grace, and purpose. Her professional achievements were matched by her personal passions-she had a keen eye for fashion, a love for cooking and music, and a talent for knitting. These hobbies were not just pastimes but expressions of her creativity and care for others.

Spirituality was a cornerstone of Anu's life. Raised in the Hindu tradition, she embraced a broad spiritual path that included attending Christian churches and watching Joel Osteen every Sunday with her friends. Her open-hearted approach to faith reflected her inclusive spirit and deep compassion.

Anu is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith; her son-in-law, Dr. Ronald E. Smith, her brother, Kirit Jhaveri; sister-in-law, Nita Jhaveri; nephews Ashutosh Jhaveri, Siddharth Narayana, and Mrinal Sattawala; nieces Alka Jani and Sujata Narayana; and her sister Nalini Narayana. She was predeceased by her parents Mansukhlal and Hasmukhben Jhaveri, as well as her sisters Usha Sattawala and Kummud Parikh.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Georgetown at a later date.

Anu's legacy lives on through the many lives she touched with love, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dignity. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
