ARTHEA PAULOS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29, 2010.
Arthea Buckman Paulos 1947 ~ 2010 Arthea Buckman Paulos, 63, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loved ones on August 24, 2010 following a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS).Arthea was born on January 29, 1947 in Savanna, Illinois to Arthur and Dorothea Buckman. After Arthea's birth, she and her family moved to Kankakee, Illinois where she was raised alongside her four younger siblings. Arthea graduated from Northwestern School of Dental Hygiene in 1966. She married Peter E. Paulos on September 11, 1966 and they had three beautiful children together in Salt Lake City, Utah where they made it their home for 34 years. Arthea loved being a "grammy" to her six beautiful grandchildren. She was a loyal friend, a loving mother and grandmother and a constant presence in her children's lives. Arthea was a second mom to many and will be dearly missed! Arthea had a love of learning and was an avid reader. She traveled the world and developed a great affection for various cultures and people. She took great pleasure in cooking and entertaining family and friends. Arthea had a green thumb and took pride in being an active member of the Garden Club of Cottonwood. She was also an avid sports fan and was often found cheering for the Utes and Jazz. Arthea is survived by her parents (Arthur and Dorothea Buckman), siblings (Paul Buckman, Judy and Tom Splawski, David and Debbie Buckman, and Jane and Ron Betts), children (Andrew Paulos, Peter and Summer Paulos, and Stephanie and Jackson Blacklock), as well as her six grandchildren (Elle Jane, Emi Kate, Lucy Sue, Sadie Gay, Ayden Peter, and Parker Gus Paulos). The family cannot thank Arthea's caregivers enough for their love and support over the past three years, specifically, Teri Hancock, Florence Opoku, Jessica Figueiredo, and Azsia Ortiz-Carino. A memorial service will be held in Newtown, Connecticut at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 28th. A memorial service and tree dedication will be held on October 23rd at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Arthea's name to the ALS Association www.alsa.org or 1-800-782-4747.

Stephanie...
I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I have some of the greatest memories of her while you and I were living in D.C. What a FUN lady! I am honored to say that I know her. "To the world she was a mother, but to you she was the world" Thinking of you.

Andrew, Peter and Stephanie,

You had such a beauful Mother. She was always so gracious, friendly and had such a contagious smile. She made me feel so special. I always ran into her at Smiths, on Saturdays, while we were both doing our grocery shopping, and she always caught me up on what you kids were doing. She was so proud of each and everyone of you.

Will and I will really miss your mom.

To all of you, Arthea's family. My sincerest and deepest sympathy. I only learned today of her passing. I'm am so glad I was able to, at least have some contact with her over the last several years.
As I told her, when you love someone they forever occupy a space in your mind and your heart. Hold tight to your fond memories, as I will, of a truly wonderful woman!

To the Paulos family and the Buckmans,
I am SO sorry to hear about Arthea. My maiden name is Cheryl Enz and I lived next door to Arthea and the Buckman family until I was 10 years old. We all had so much fun in our neighborhood, back in the days when we played outside all day and got to know our neighbors. My deepest and most sincere sympathy to all of you.

Words cannot fully express one's sorrow when a friend has passed. Arthea and I go way back to our youth (Jr. High through High School in Kankakee). We had many slumber parties and fun together as young people. Arthea was beautiful and had an infectious smile. I didn't know she was so ill. May you take comfort in knowing that she rests now in Heaven; free of pain. Someday we will all be together with those we've loved and who have passed before us. God's Blessings upon all of Arthea's family.

Dear Peter, Andrew & Stephanie,

So many fond memories of Arthea. The times we partied and just had a good time being together as friend. I cherish the memories.

One of Mugg's last visitors in Cottonwood hospital before I took her home to AZ was your mom. She was a beautiful lady and you should be proud to call her Mother.

My love to all of you. You are in my thoughts & prayers.

Sincerely,
Val Petersen

Pete, I'm sorry to read of the passing of your wife. I remember well the night Sheila and I stayed in your appartment in Oak Brook Illinois after we were married and how you and Arthea took us in and helped us out.
