Arthur Joseph "Spike" Vasseur – 71, of Bragg Hill Road, passed away in the comfort of his home and family on Saturday, August 21, 2010. Born on the family farm in Fayston on December 21, 1938, he was the son of the late Leon and Emma (Gratton) Vasseur. On May 20, 1967, he married the former Virginia Kenyon in Waitsfield. Spike was a 1958 graduate of Waitsfield High School and then went on to serve four years with the US Air Force. Following his discharge from the service, Spike returned to the family farm on Bragg Hill where he joined his brother Bob in operating the Vasseur Brothers Dairy and Maple Sugar Farm for over 50 years. A talented baseball pitcher for his high school team, Spike continued his love of sports by being active as a coach for over 16 years with Babe Ruth Baseball, served as president of Harwood Hockey for several years as well as helped in the operation of the Skatium in Waitsfield. Spike served the Town of Fayston for over 25 years as Treasurer. Spike will be fondly remembered for his devotion and love for his family and his innate ability to reach out and connect with kids of all ages. Spike is survived by his wife of 43 years, Virginia Vasseur of Fayston; their children, Karen Vasseur – Blandin and her husband, Bill of Orange, Michael Vasseur and his wife, Stephanie of Fayston, and Steve Vasseur of Fayston; 6 grandchildren, Chelsea Vasseur, Emily Vasseur, Morgan Vasseur, Alexis Blandin, Cayman Blandin, and Lillian Vasseur; a sister, Rita Mandigo of Montpelier; a brother, Robert Vasseur of Fayston; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Spike was predeceased by 2 sisters, Laura Harrington and Jeannette Pearce; 3 brothers, Adrien Vasseur, Ernest Vasseur and Albert Vasseur; and 2 nephews, Douglas Vasseur and James Vasseur. A celebration of Spike's life will be held at the home of Doug and Kelley Lewis, 47 Kew-Vasseur Road (off from Bragg Hill Road), Fayston on Sunday, August 29th at 12 p.m. Please bring food for the grill, a side dish to share and your own beverage (no alcohol please). It was 1953 and my family had just rented a house in Fayston. I entered the 8th grade mid-October. My Dad dropped me off in front of the Fayston School (later known as Burley Architects, I believe) and when I opened the door I was so happy to see 22 students at their desks. (I had come from a large class of 14 so 22 was a bonanza!). In the next few minutes, however, I would learn that the room I was standing in was the ONLY room in the school and the 22 pupils represented EVERYONE in grades first through eighth. While I was busy thinking of how I could convince my parents to move again, Spike was showing me to my desk and telling me how happy he was to have a new classmate. And, rightfully so! Until I walked in he was the ONLY pupil in the eighth grade. Not only did we hit it off right away we discovered that our two minds made up one great pupil. My weakness was math and his was english. What a team! I had to leave before school closed that year. Spike and I were both down in the mouth about it, but we knew that when summer ended we would meet again as freshmen at Waitsfield High School. And we did. I don't ever remember anyone being angry or put out with Spike. I don't believe he ever had an enemy. He was a generous, loyal, caring person the whole time I knew him. And, you know how today people talk about having each other's "back"? Spike had a lot of people's backs, but particularly mine. When Saturday night rolled around and we were going to a dance -- Dillingham, Horse Barn or Warren -- I knew that if I was unsuccessful in getting a bottle of my father's dandelion wine out of the cellar and into the car, I could call on Spike. His father also made dandelion wine. He will be missed and fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.

To the Vasseur Family,

I'm deeply sorry to hear of Spike's passing. His commitment to the land he worked, his community and the many young athletes he influenced and supported are wonderful legacies to leave behind. Harwood Hockey would not be what it is today without his efforts. He may be gone but he will not be forgotten.

To the Vasseur family - Our condolences on Spike's passing. Wonderful guy. I remember him serving as an enthusiastic coach for baseball, and being invovled in soccer and hockey. Fond memories of helping out on the farm - haying, sugaring, and tending to the cows. He was a great spirit.

Only saw Spike once. As a schoolboy in Richmond, I watched Spike pitch a brillant game for Waitsfield High. The game lasted 10 innings and it took two of Richmond's best pitchers to beat him. Spike was the best pitcher in the state that year. Spike left an indelible memory on many baseball fans. Thanks for the memory Brain Palmer Barre Vt

I remember going to the farm a couple of times over the years with Arthur's nephew Doug who was one of my closest friends,I loved to help out during the sugaring season, the best part was the jug of syrup Arthur would give me at the end of the day. To the Vasseur family,
I had the honor of working with Spike during the early days of Harwood Hockey. He always had a cheerful grin and an energetic attitude. His "common sense" approach helped put out fires before they grew. Through his efforts, Harwood Hockey grew to be a respected program and a contender at the high school level. Your loss is felt throughout the Harwood community.
