Barbara Byrd Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2024.
Barbara Allen Byrd, 84, passed away on August 16, 2024, in Weatherford, Texas. Born on July 8, 1940, in Washington, DC, Barbara was a lifelong educator and cherished member of her community.

Barbara dedicated over 30 years to teaching at Millsap ISD, where she left a lasting impact on her students, many of whom regarded her as their favorite teacher. Her educational journey included degrees from Texas Christian University and Tarleton State University, which fueled her passion for teaching and lifelong learning.

A true "Salt of the Earth" woman, Barbara embraced the country lifestyle on her family farm, where she found joy in gardening, cooking, and baking. Her hands were happiest in the dirt of her garden or when spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Abigail, Jack, and Dalton. Barbara's positive energy and welcoming manner made her a beloved figure, not only within her family but also across the wider community.

She is survived by her children, Carrie Kelley (Brent) and their children Abigail and Jack, Brenda Byrd, and David Byrd (and his son Dalton); her brother David Pace (Nhu and daughter Natalie); her sister Virginia Scheuweiler (Robert and their children Leah and MaryBeth), Beth Neumann (Jeff and their children Jill and Jared); and brother-in-law Jimmy Cartrette (children: Allen, Katie, and Stephen). Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Byrd, her sister Diana Cartrette, and her parents, Marjorie and Allen Pace.

In keeping with her wishes, Barbara requested no funeral service but rather that friends and family celebrate her life in their own special ways. True to her vocation, Barbara chose to donate her body to UNT for research, continuing to teach and inspire even posthumously.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the "Millsap Scholarship Fund" at Millsap ISD, 201 East Brazos, Millsap, TX 76066, in memory of Barbara Byrd. Her legacy will continue to influence and inspire future generations through this fund, reflecting her lifelong commitment to education and community support.

I only met her once, I was hanging out with Dalton and we went to visit her. She was the sweetest lady, reminded me of my own grandmother. I might not have known her well but I know her passing is hard on everyone who loved her.

Truly a blessing to the world. I don´t know what I would have done without my grandmother always pestering me to learn more and push myself to be better. Truly my best friend on this planet.

What a pleasure it was to have known both Ma Byrd and Roy. She was definitely one of a kind. She enjoyed the simpler things in life and what it brought. I will truly miss her as she was such a joy to be around. Don´t ask her a question unless you really wanted to know because she was sure to give you a straight answer. Rest in peace!

Any time I see Hummingbirds I´m reminded of the times Diana and I would visit Barbara and set on her back porch. She had lots of Hummingbirds coming to her feeders. Barbara was a beautiful person full of life and love. Her love for gardening I´m sure was instilled in her at an early age by her dear mother Marjorie. I will miss my sister-in-law. I thank God for the wonderful memories. I love you Barbara. May you rest in peace.

I stopped by her house to pick up my cousin Daltons shirt (her grandson) before we went to PBR. I asked her to take a picture with me and she said "no I have a tooth missing". I said "who cares, I will eventually too". We laughed for a solid 2 minutes after that. Her laugh was the most infectious laugh I´ve ever heard. I promise to keep laughing with you and smiling at our memories!

Grandma was such a family oriented person! You would see her light up every time one of her family members came to visit!

My first memory of my Grandma is sitting on her back porch with her while I played with my toys.

A true gem! Smart and so quick witted. An inspiration and role model for me. I love you.

She was a treasure to me, helped me through my father's passing by making meatloaf, mashed potatoes and hard green peas and then nap on her couch. I love you Barb and hold you close to my heart
