Barrie Fortier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2009.
GUILFORD - Barrie W. Fortier, 65, died unexpectedly Jan. 29, 2009, in Guilford, doing what anyone who knew him would expect; helping someone else. He was born Sept. 2, 1943, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Lewis and Flora (Dudley) Fortier. A lifelong resident of Guilford, he attended Guilford schools and graduated from Piscataquis Community High School, Class of 1961. He spent three years in the U.S. Army with Company B 83rd Engineering Battalion, serving both in France and Vietnam. Upon returning to Maine, he worked as a heavy equipment operator for several companies, including Haley's Construction, Davis & Glidden, Cleaves Farms, Herbert Pulkkinen, Gerald Tho-mas and lastly for Pike Paving. He also worked for Donny Thompkins, where he was one of 10 "ice road truckers" in Greenville, hauling wood across Moosehead Lake. He was a member of Guilford Fire Department for 25 years and was a part of their basketball and muster teams. Barrie was an avid cribbage player and would do anything for his family and friends. With his last kind act, hopefully two people will be able to see again as the result of corneal transplant. He is survived by his children, Seth and his partner, Alexa, of Guilford, Boyd and his wife, Joanne, of Jackman, Niki of Guilford and Todd and his wife, Tara, of Guilford; and the "troops," Jeremy, Tina, Desneige, Derrick, Kaytlyn, Zachary and Nicholas. He is also survived by his best friend and the mother of his children, Linda Fortier; her mother, Maude Smith of Guilford; his siblings, Ross Sr. and Bonnie of Guilford and Emily and William Martin of Greenville; two nieces and three nephews and their families; a very special aunt, "Winnie" Pulkkinen; several cousins and their families; a very special friend, Earling "Zeke" Hersey; and too many other friends to list. He was predeceased by his parents; a nephew, Jason; and his father-in-law, Roy Smith. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak St., Guilford. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Guilford United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephen Dean officiating. Spring burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Willimantic. Barrie liked to keep things simple; casual dress is requested for the calling hours and service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Guil-ford Fire Department, P.O. Box 420, Guilford, ME 04443. For an online guest register, go to www.CrosbyNeal.com.

Linda and family: My sincerest sympathy to you. My late husband, Kermit (K. C.) worked with Lew and the Fortier kids grew up with my kids. Barrie's good humor and unusual personality leaves a leagacy that we will always remember. He certainly made his mark in the world and will never be forgotten.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Barrie. My heart goes out to you. Although I have not seen him for many years, he left a lasting impression on me. Every time I hear someone speaking bad French, I tell them about Barrie, who deliberately made me laugh so much in French Class, speaking French with a Maine accent, I would be in tears. Now it brings me to tears to think he's gone.
There were many times we got into trouble for "acting out" and laughing "inappropriately," so the teachers thought. Apparently, he never lost that ability to make people laugh and left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Obviously, this is a tremendous loss for his family, friends and the community. I am so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Family of Barrie, we would like to send our deepest sympathy. We all knew and loved Uncle Bear as we called him. He use to make sure the apt on 3rd floor was always warm for us when we lived at Johnny's Apt's. He always had a smile on his face at Uncle Zekes and when we all walked in he always had his arms out for a hug for the Bear. He was and will always be a great joy in our hearts. To the family of Barry,
Writing the above, I realized that most everyone is a family member to Barry. There weren't any strangers to him. I will surely miss this big bear of a man. There are no hugs like the ones Barry gave.

I hope your grief is short and your good memories are many. He would want the best for his family.

My sympathy goes to all of Barrie's family..Although I haven't seen Barrie for many years I remember when he drove for Donne Tompkins, as did my husband, Ronnie (Cowboy)..bringing the wood across the lake, an experience I'm sure he never forgot and one that had never been done..and as many have said, one who was always willing to help...May God Bless him.

To the Fortier family:
I was very sorry to hear of Barrie's passing. When we were kids growing up on Hudson Avenue we saw a lot of each other and had great times. Until a couple of years ago when Barrie and I happened to meet on the street in Guilford, I don't think we had seen each other for 30 years. Nevertheless Barrie gave a warm greeting and started to resume a conversation that could have taken place yesterday. He was a great guy. Our prayers and best wishes to all of you

To the entire Fortier Family,
Our heart breaks for each of you. We know how much your dad meant to so many people. May the memories of him last forever, and carry you through life, until you are once again united. Please know that you have the entire town of Jackman thinking and praying for you. The qualities of your dad shine through each day when Boyd does some special thing for whoever needs help here in town. Your dad was a great man who taught you all so well. May his love, and the peace of knowing he is in so many memories help you through this time.
