I had the great pleasure to work with Bernard and his staff a few years ago and was saddened to hear of his passing. His good-humor, clear-headed insights, frankness, tolerance and openness were traits that I found made him easy to work with and for during often complex and shifting projects. A fine man for whom the civil service is the poorer without. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues for their loss.

Dear Claire and Stéphane,

I have asked Elizabeth Hung Sorfleet to write you on my behalf. I served on the Board of Directors of the Social Planning Council at the same time frame as you, Claire, and Bernard. I would like to convey my sincere condolances on your loss. Unfortunately, I am not able to attend today's and tomorrow's ceremonies, however, I will keep you in my thoughts tomorrow and throughout the days to come.

Please accept my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Bernard demonstrated how the federal government can support the voluntary sector in tangible, helpful ways. He came to understand the sector, used consultation with Advisory committee's (VolNet and IM/IT) well and made the rules work for the voluntary sector. We know that he valued and loved his family and sometimes heard about his much-enjoyed vacations. I'm sorry that I did not know of his illness earlier. He made a great contribution and will be missed. Maggie - retired CEO, Family Service Canada.
