My nephew and I took an effective cycling class from Bill ca 1983. The class met at his house. We and some others had an organization going for a few years...the Greater Detroit Bicycle League. GDBL didn't go far. We did operate a series of tours of what was then the reviving East Riverfront of Detroit. Chene Park was built around then.
The same nephew and I attended the Human Powered vehicle championships in Indianapolis in 1984. (pictured in another message on this board. We stayed at Bill's father's house.

I think we met as we were parking our bikes at GMR in the fall of 1978. A memorable ride while I still worked there was our commuter century: 100 miles plus a "full" day of work (courtesy of GMR´s flex time), all within 12 hours. That one got a write-up in the League of American Wheelmen´s magazine. A few years later, we bicycled to Indianapolis for that year´s LAW convention. It was Bill´s first time bicycle camping, and the trip more than doubled his mileage on his brand new Easy Rider. I had great fun riding behind him and watching pedestrians turn to stare at this weird recumbent bike.

Connie and Bill were our good friends for many years, they stood up at our wedding, we skied together and enjoyed many visits to their Torch Lake residence. Connie and Bill were meant for each other in many ways

I know Mr Frey from being a close friend of Chris growing up, going through scouts and staying close throughout the years. He was truly a kind heart and mentor to me and many boys through the years of scouts, teaching us canoeing, cycling, sailing, and star identification. He was someone who always did what made sense or what was most interesting regardless of what anyone might say or think. Some stories that come to mind are the canoe sailing rig that he built which inspired my dad to do the same. Or taking Chris´s Cub Scout pinewood derby car to the GM wind tunnel to ensure it was the most aerodynamic on the track. On big scout trips, with a canoe on the roof and a Pepsi in the cup holder, he always pulled out his maps to look for a scenic route, and taught us to appreciate the journey as much as the destination.

My father, Vic Macks was in the American Youth Hostel Sailing club with Bill. When I started working at the GM Tech Center Engineering Staff building in 1984, Bill spent quite a bit of time reviewing with me step by step how he managed his bicycle commuting from home to work and back. I still remember the details about how he maintained clean and presentable "suit and tie" clothing at work while commuting by bike on a lengthy ride through busy and not very bike friendly streets of Detroit's east side on a long bike ride to work in Warren. He was a great inspiration to try bike commuting and a very kind person!

I worked in the Computer Science Department at GMR. My office was not far from his. I enjoyed many conversations with Biil. He was a very kind, easygoing person, and we shared many interests. I recall him biking to work.
RIP Bill

Growing up, Uncle Bill taught me many things that continue to be interests in my life: Sailing, Canoeing, Cycling, Knots, Math, Maps, and Frisbee, to name a few. He was always patient and willing to share his time and knowledge. As an adult he was kind and generous to my family and consistently up for a project, a game, sharing stories, or hearing a song. I still remember his guidance on how to position the boat while we waited for a puff of wind to fill our sails, intentionally flipping the sailboat or his canoe to teach me how to right them, and figuring out that the answer in my Calculus textbook was incorrect due to a rounding error in an early step in the proof. I am not sure he meant these to be lessons in life at the time, but on reflection, they sure feel that way. I am grateful for the time I was able to spend with Uncle Bill almost every summer for nearly 40 years. He will be greatly missed!

Bill and I went through most of the K-12 years together, graduating from NCHS in '61. We bonded through sailing at the Indianapolis Sailing Club, where we initially raced as a skipper/crew team in 1960 and then as competitors once Bill acquired his own Snipe. I seemed to do much better when we were a team, which, upon reflection, was most likely due to his geometrically wired brain.
Bill provided me with detailed photos showing how he converted his canoe to a sail-canoe. After looking at them again, I think Bill might have had a third patent in hand!
I am left with many fond memories and look forward to seeing the Frey family at their celebration of Bill's life.

I shared an office with Bill Frey for several years at General Motors and can attest to the fact that Bill was well liked by everyone at GM. His research work was known internationally. At conferences in Europe I heard his name and work referenced several times by speakers in these conferences. Bill will be sadly missed by all of us who used to meet with him for lunch after our retirements.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill at Jenny and Rich´s wedding at Torch Lake. He was kind and welcoming to us all and I´m glad to have celebrated their marriage at a place and with people he truly loved.

I met Bill at Jenny and Rich´s wedding in Michigan. I vividly remember our common interest in computer graphics programming, and the computer language Adobe Postscript. We talked a long time and I marveled at his knowledge and eagerness to share his enthusiasm about scripting with me, a young programmer. It´s a fond memory. I share my deepest condolences with all who knew and loved him.
