I remember his voice when the whole family was getting ready for the day.
I was very young, 7yrs old, starting a new school.
His voice calmed me.
God bless.

For years I lived in Flagstaff & Prescott. When I would drive to Phoenix, as soon as I got into their broadcasting range, I looked forward to listening to KOY Radio , especially, the enjoyable program Bill Heywood in the Morning . I was saddened & disheartened at what happened to Bill & his wife, Susan. The world is less bright without them.

Living now in So Cal, I just heard about "Sweet William". Remembering Bill will always take me back to Van's Donut House in Tempe, where my dad always had Bill on in the morning I still remember many of the jokes and of course his guests like Dr Brazelbush. my heart goes out to Bill's family, and I want to let them know how much Bill meant to our family over the years.

Bill and Susan will certainly know from the entries in this guest book how much they are truly loved and missed. I never knew Susan, but Bill was a landmark in the Park Central area when I knew him back in the early 70's when Phoenix was a small town. A nicer man was not to be found. And so handsome! Prayers to his family and close friends.

"Sweet William in the Morning" I will remember Bill Heywood forever and was completely saddened and shocked by his passing. To his four children and extended family what a horrendous loss, please somehow find peace and comfort knowing that your beloved Dad, Bill, was loved by so many average Joe's just making that trek across the beautiful valley every morning laughing along the way! I haven't lived in the valley going on 17 years, but it is my true home and your Dad made each day special!!!! Thank You Bill Heywood for making that morning drive so very bearable!!! St. Patricks Day at Houlihans on Camelback was great with Bill and the gang in the 80's, way too much fun!!!! Thank you Bill Heywood you will always be remembered and missed by many. Gods speed!!!

I wish you peace and understanding, Kelly, Stan,Chris and Nicole. Bill Heywood and Susan were truly wonderful people. I have no doubt that they loved you and had a difficult time leaving you; however, they made the choice that was theirs to make. My family and I met your father when we came by to see the house just off 7th street. Bill exuded such warmth and understanding as he showed us through the house that he and Susan were selling. He even showed my daughter a giant chococolate chip cookie that he had gotten from Susan for a special occasion. My daughter still remembers that cookie. Remember the good times that you shared with Bill and Susan and they will always be with you.

I was very sorry to hear the sad news that Bill and Susan had passed away. I had the pleasure of meeting them while working with Nicole at a financial firm. They were quite a dynamic couple, so loving and polished. I am so grateful to have been a volunteer for Scratch & Sniff. I deeply admired your mom and dad for their generous hearts and loyal dedication to their family, their friends, the community, and the countless pets they helped save. More than anything, I wanted to express my heartfelt sympathy to Nicole. Sadly, it is times like this that often bring people together. I am here for you and would love to reconnect. Until then, may the love of family and friends comfort you at this difficult time. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to the Heywood family during this most tragic time. Bill was a fellow radio personality, and he honored me, by letting me sit in on his show when I was just a green, behind-the-ears, student in broadcasting school. He had a profound affect on my style, not only in dress, but also my style on the air. He is truly one of the legendary stars of valley radio. He and Susan will be deeply missed...God's graces to the Heywood family. Rsst in peace Bill and Suasan...Rest in Peace...

In memory of Lois M Adams I say HELLO to the Families of Bill&Susan Heywood.
I know your pain and feel your grief and I offer my condolences at time of your loss as it is never easy to lose loved ones or anyone for that fact.
Lois and I have lived here since 1955 and even now that Lois is gone we used to enjoy the radio work of Bill where ever he truned on the mike. As an officer with valley national bank starting in the mid 1950s I had an opportunity to know many of the local on air personalities not just because I was their baker in most cases. After my finance and banking days ended and I moved on into our own business I still had some business connections with some of the local radio and tv personalities. One of the first I met early on in my career was the likes of
Jim Spero and Paul B Mudt and the list goes on. As much as we enjoyed Bill on radio somehow we never got to shake his had but we were like yopu his faithful listeners and how wonderful it would have been to make both their acquaintances especially with Susan and he untiring love and work with animals.
Well I must apologize for this seems more like us than the Heywood's but no not met to be but I thought it to be ok if the family knew why and how Lois and I came to have such Love and Respect for Bill & Susan Heywood.
Bill,Susan your work here on earth is complete you now fly with God's angels
and sit at the right hand of God.Bill if you can here me let me know your call letters and I'll be a listening.
So Long For Now.

My hearts go out to the Heywood family and all their close friends. I rarely missed Bill's morning show on KOY, and later on KTAR. What stands out in my mind was how special he made the Christmas season. The great music KOY played, along with Bill's warm, smooth voice, was almost magical. I always thought he would be a part of my mornings and was very sad when that changed. What a loss on so many levels.

My parents, Sid and Sarah Levenstein, had a jewelry store on Main Street in Borger, Texas down the block from Grodzin's Western Wear. They were very good friends with Morris and Sally and their daughters Sandy and Susan. As an entrepreneur, my Dad always thought Susie was such a go-getter they got together with Susan and Bill over the years. I am so sad over this situation, especially for Nicole. But from the postings here, it looks like she will have many friends to help her get through this difficult time. May the memory of her parents give her comfort.

So sorry for this terrible tragedy. Bill Heywood was Phoenix Radio, much like W. Steven Martin. I never heard much about Mrs. Heywood, but from what I have read she and her husband were dedicated people. Bill and Susan were so supportive of other causes and businesses in the valley. We are grateful for the help and publicity Bill provided to our Runner's Den race. Our deepest sympathies to the family.

I was born and raised in Phoenix, and I haven't thought of Bill Heywood since I left for college in 1975. But he was a huge part of my life in grade school and high school! I loved his morning show, and he introduced me to the magic of old time radio theater. When I was in 8th grade, I even won a contest to write a "radio drama" that he and his staff produced and put on the air -- pretty exciting stuff! I met him several times, and he was always friendly and willing to talk to an awkward kid and her mom. Warm thoughts to his daughter Nicole -- you have special parents, always remember that. Until we meet again...

I moved here in 1973 from NYC and found Bill Heywood on the radio. I followed him to every station he was on. Such a pleasure to listen to him. He took the stress out of a busy commute just by listening to him. I heard a commercial about 2 weeks ago on the radio and it sounded so much like Bill and it instantly brought a smile to my face. Bill and Susan are at peace now and they are together - still. God Bless the families of Bill and Susan. Keep your memories close to your heart and that will help to lighten the sorrow. You see all the kind words and love for Bill and Susan in this guest book. What a solumn tribute to them.

To the family, friends & associates of Bill & Susan, please accept my sincerest condolences & sympathy. It's difficult to lose those we love. Personally, I, as well as countless others, did not know Bill but felt as if we did from his long-time presence on the airwaves in the Valley. Every time I would make a trip to Phoenix from Flagstaff during the 1970's on, I looked forward to reaching the point where I could receive radio transmission of KOY & KUPD. Bill was that GOOD of a broadcaster &, from all accounts, was that GOOD of a person as was his wife; the love-of-his-life, Susan. I've been greatly saddened & distressed at the circumstances surrounding their passing but have learned that this mortal life presents situations that, often, seem insurmountable. Thankfully, Eternity will be the complete opposite. Until then, peaceful slumber Bill & Susan.

To the Heywood children, you have my deepest sympathies in your great loss. I knew and worked with your father at Equitable and saw him at Luxury Tour on a regular basis although I wouldn't call us dear friends I had such respect and honor for him because of the kind of man he was, classy and kind and always had a smile and a kind word for others. If you need any assistance placing the poodles at all please let me know, I am active in animal rescue and would consider it an honor to assist if family members will not be taking them in. My heart breaks for all of you at this difficult and heart wrenching time. When I first started out in radio in New York State, the station owner--who also doubled as the morning jock--asked me to record Heywood's KOY morning program for him the next time I visited Arizona. How in the heck did he know Bill Heywood at KOY? My boss was incredulous that I, a native Arizonan, did not know his national reputation. Anyway, while in Phoenix, I recorded the entire morning show (pausing the music and spots) and handed the cassette to my boss when I returned. I sure wish I had that tape now. Great instruction material because Heywood was a timeless classic--overused words today, but appropriate for this great legend. In this episode, I also gained appreciation for my boss who was sort of a legend in his own right in his days as the morning man in Schenectedy/Albany/Rochester radio. Even in quasi retirement with his own station, he still wanted to learn more and turned to the very best for instruction. May we never cease learning. Heartfelt condolences to the Heywood family. Thank you for sharing them with us. May this beautiful couple rest in peace.

it's taken me several days now to finally gather my thoughts. bill and I worked together after I first relocated from the twin cities and my new position was to work on air at koy am until things settles down on the fm side. i remember my first day at koy as if it were the first day at school. bill was just getting off the air on a monday, we both introduced ourselves, i walked into the studio and he walked out. moments later he walked back into the studio with a cup of coffee and said to me " you can't work without this". later he asked if anyone had taken me around to meet everyone on the staff etc. our pd gary mccarthy had been away out of town on my first day. bill was that kind of man. a real inspiration both on and off the microphone. he has been a friend, personal reference (even for my current role at bonneville at kpkx) and simply someone who you could call and chat with over the years to me. i am sorry for the family they leave behind, friends and the leagues of listeners that woke up to bill at koy and the station call letters to follow. bill & susan loved this community, and contributed in many was to the greatness of phoenix and the surrounding area. my friends in broadcasting saw bill as a true professional and a person with professionalism and he is going to be missed greatly. my friend and susan rest in peace. scott kramer, kpkx

I knew Susie Grodzin Heywood growing up in Borger, TX. She was short, perky, friendly and always had a smile on her pretty face. She wrote a story for my book "Memories of Growing Up in Borger Texas" about her parents moving to Borger from their home in Oklahoma and putting in a Western Wear store on Main Street. It was really humorous. She was so sweet to respond when I asked her to write the story and submitted a well written, descriptive and humorous tale. My heart breaks to learn of her illness and all the factors that went into her's and Bill's decision. So many have written here, it is clear they were revered.

My sincerest condolences to the Heywood Family. Bill Heywood was a delight for my family in the 70s and beyond, we still talked of our enjoyment of his entertainment style even this past Christmas. May they be at peace, and may that ease your sorrow.

No, no, no! This can't be! Bill was an incredible talent, and he and Susan were a fantastic couple. This is so hard to grasp. Expressing one's deepest condolences to the family just doesn't seem to be enough.
For a short time, I worked at KOY (as their traffic pilot). It was just prior to Bill's arriving. I was so disappointed that I didn't get to work with him. Bill Heywood was KOY. For he and Susan to be gone, especially in this way, is deeply painful. I'm so intensely saddened.
Thank you for the wonderful memories, Bill.

We have been blessed to have Bill and Susan come into our lives by coincidence on two occasions over the years, most recently as neighbors in Kierland. What an Arizona treasure the Heywoods will always be. Wishing comfort for the family.

It has been said that men the caliber of Bill Heywood, make make everyone around them, better. He made me a super star, at least to my children. See, I won tickets from Bill, on the radio station for the Ice Capades. My son is 43 years old now and at times recalls the wonderful time we had at The Veterans Memorial Coliseum. I know, I know, anyone could have one them. But it was me and the memory of speaking with Bill is still there and just as priceless.

A very, very sad loss to the Phoenix community. None was better to listen to in the mornings than Bill. He did charity work for local community needs and will be remembered for that. God Bless Bill and his Wife, as we feel the loss of a good man.

Bill was the voice of Phoenix growing up there in the 70's. It seems he was a genuine, kind, caring person, and I hope he and Susan are experiencing the peace that recently eluded them.

Bill was working at KTAR when I went to work upstairs at KTAR-TV in '72. What a pro and what a voice. So sorry about this terrible ending to such a great man's life.

In 20 years of owning a PR agency I probably had been rejected by every radio guy in town, but never by BIll. Always wanted to help. I'm sorry to hear Susan was so ill. Our loss, but their peace.
