Bob Stitts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2013.
Reverend Robert Calvin Stitts, founding and long-time pastor at Bayside Baptist Church in Harrison, Tennessee, died of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) on Wednesday at the Chattanooga Hospice Center. He was seventy-five. A deep, abiding faith marked his passing. Just as Mr. Stitts trusted God with his life, he trusted God with his death.
Mr. Stitts was born August 16, 1937, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Curtis and Lorena Sartoris Stitts. He received a diploma from Withrow High School in Cincinnati in 1955. He attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky, where he played on the tennis team; he graduated in 1959 with a degree in sales and marketing. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1959, Mr. Stitts served two years in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked as a salesman with the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company.
Accepting a call to pastoral ministry, Mr. Stitts enrolled at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, earning the M.Div degree in 1967. While a seminarian, he was a youth minister at First Baptist Church of Danville,Kentucky. On April 3, 1965, he married Lillian Acree of Dalton, Georgia. Three children followed. Mr. Stitts' first pastorate was at First Baptist Church of Cleves, Ohio, between 1965 and 1968. In 1968, Mr. Stitts became the senior pastor of East Chattanooga Baptist Church. Bayside Baptist Chapel, a mission of East Chattanooga Baptist Church, held its first service, with Mr. Stitts preaching, on January 23, 1972. On June 17, 1973, Bayside Baptist Church was constituted with 308 charter members. For the next thirty-one years, until his retirement in 2004, Mr. Stitts was the senior pastor. The church, as did he, "walked by faith, not by sight." After retiring from full-time ministry in 2004, Mr. Stitts was interim pastor at Lookout Valley Baptist Church and Hixson First Baptist Church.
Mr. Stitts' ministry and family is his legacy. As a pastor, Mr. Stitts humbly sought to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love his neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world. He was hospitable, loved what was good, was trustworthy and encouraging-the Biblical attributes of a godly pastor. As a husband and father, he was loving, patient, and loyal. And he fulfilled the highest duty of a parent by delivering his children into adulthood whole.

Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years, Lillian of Ooltewah; three children, Adrian Calvin Stitts of Chattanooga, Lorena Stitts (Richard) Glenn of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Eric Charles (Amy) Stitts of Ooltewah; eight grandchildren, Caroline and Ross Stitts of Chattanooga, Ryan and Andrew Glenn of Lancaster, and John Robert, Emily, Mary Beth, and Matthew Stitts of Ooltewah; and two siblings, Maxel L. (Velma) Stitts of Dallas, and Marilyn J. (Robert) Haskell of Toronto. Mr. Stitts is reunited in death with his parents.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 6 PM at Bayside Baptist Church with Rev. Eric Stitts officiating. Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 24, 2013 between 4 PM and 8 PM; Saturday, May 25, 2013 between 10 AM and 4 PM and on Sunday, May 26, between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM at Bayside Baptist Church at 6100 Highway 58 North, Harrison, Tennessee 37341.
Active Pallbearers will be members of the Bayside Baptist Church Ministerial Staff. Honorary Pallbearers will be all ministers in attendance at the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bayside Mission Partnership or the Bayside Building Fund, both of Bayside Baptist Church, 6100 Highway 58, Harrsion, Tennessee 37341.

Brother Bob left many memories of exemplifying how to live:
He showed genuine care such as taking time to ride the VBS bus to pick up children in our neighborhood even my own.
He showed his love for his family with stories admiring his wife & kids.
He showed witty humor with comments similar to this, "Up in heaven, we will be able to eat all the dessert we want and not worry about the calories!"
He showed his faith with passages such as Romans 8 that not even death can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Mrs Lillian,Adrian,Lorena,Eric, and family,I just Prat that God gives you all the Comfort,Peace, and Strength, that only HE,can give you all,in the coming days, weeks, months,as You All were Blessed to have One of the Greatest,Husband,Father,
Grandfather, that was Trully a man of God,who Always walked by faith, not by sight, and Lead by Example! I was soo Happy too see him and George Hubbuch, come to visit me during visitation on Oct.24,2000,and was Thankful to be Baptized by Bro.Bob on Dec.17,2000.My PaPa was tickled, when he saw me wearing my Glasses, when Bro.Bob Babtized me,and even though I knew he had never let someone drown,I didn't want to be the first one,I figured I would trip, going down those few steps,in the Babtismal, and I don't know how to swim, but that was a Blessing! One of the things that always stuck with me,is when he said,A Couple that Prays Together,Stays Together! Thank You for being there for me,the Last Six Months, since my Mom Died,as they meant the World to me,as Bro Bob,and Bro.Eric, always knew the right things to say.His Memorial Service Was the Most Beautiful one,I have ever seen, and Lorena,Adrian, and Eric, did a Great Job of sharing soo many special stories about their Father! It was Trully a Blessing! I Love ALL Of The Very Sweet Stitts Family!

Dear Lillian and family,As I was remembering Brother Bob this morning, these thoughts came to me about his homecoming in heaven:
Walking streets of gold, seeing gates of pearl, sapphires and jewels set all about.
There's loved ones I haven't seen since youth, others who've passed on years before. What happiness on their faces I had never seen. Hugs and joyful reunions all around.
The singing grabs me and fills my soul with delight. There must be thousands of voices so beautiful, sweet, and pure.
Peacefulness and overwhelming joy fill me. Anxieties, worries, and fear are completely gone. I'm at home.
But the greatest I've not told. My Savior lifts my head and the love that's substained, guided, and held me through life now I see. What an experience, it can't be described as He gently takes me in His arms. I'm now safely home.
Love, Beverly deYampert

One of my fondest memories of Brother Bob are his children's stories. I can remember eagerly awaiting to hear about Corky the Crow and the vast array of other characters every Sunday morning. Bob was also a faithful friend and neighbor to my family, often stopping by just to fellowship with us. Recently I've been reading "Don't Waste Your Life" by John Piper and Bob is a shining example of a life lived unwasted for the furtherment of the Kingdom and for the exultation of Christ and Him crucified. Bob was a man who lived by radical faith and devotion to his Savior. He has had a lasting impact and inspiration on my life and the lives of countless others to not waste the blessed life I've been given but to live by radical, cross-centered, Christ-exulting, God-glorifying, Kingdom-furthering faith.

Lillian and family, I have been so blessed over the years by Brother Bob and your family! From the time we came to Bayside in the early 80's until now, Brother Bob has been such a witness to our family as a pastor and also as an example of a godly husband and father. Besides my own father, I respected Brother Bob more than any man I have known. He has baptized all 3 of my children and performed two marriages for them. He has counseled me thru several very difficult times in my life and most recently, he has visited my husband in the hospital as he was fighting his own cancer! I know heaven is rejoicing to have Brother Bob there and we want to love you and comfort you as you work thru your grief. I praise The Lord for the day that Bayside and the Stitts family came into my life!!

Our family thanks Lillian and all the Stitts children for sharing Brother Bob during his ministry. He was our shepherd, counselor, and pastor until he retired. He visited the sick at home and in the hospital, performed marriages for our children, officiated funerals, was our teacher and counselor. We are so sorry for his passing, but know he is with Jesus. We are praying for the Stitts family. We have lost a good and faithful servant of the Lord.

To the Stitts family,
Bro Bob meant so much to the Fielden family, our loss is Heaven's gain. We loved hearing him preach, sing and tell all his stories. He was the best story teller ever. We are so thankful to have learned so much about our Lord and Savior through his life example. The Stitts family has always displayed a Godly example for others to follow. Bro Bob had a true heart for the lost and loved sharing Jesus every where and with anyone. Eric you are following in his footsteps, keep up the great work until the nets are full. Miss Lillian, Brother Eric and all the Stitts family my prayers are with each of you. Brother Bob was our Pastor from 1990 until he retired and he groomed a well qualified son to follow in his footsteps. He was a kind, gentle and generous man who was a living example of 2 Timothy 2:15. With Miss Lillian beside him he built a lighthouse in the Harrison community. Although he will be sorely missed by thousands, he is now with the Jesus he loved so dearly and no longer feels the pain and suffering he went through.

Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Now, on to your reward. Thank you for your years of service to those of us who have been blessed to be a part of your ministry over the years. I can still see you smiling at the pulpit telling one of your many stories of your Army days, shoe selling days, and how Lillian served you iced tea when you met her, and how she has been making it for you ever since. You are a blessed man. I know the seeds you planted will bloom on in the souls of so many.I know because I am one of those blooms. Thank you Bro. Bob....you will be missed!!!
