Brian MACDONALD Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Sep. 12, 2017.
MacDONALD, Brian Harold Born on July 5, 1947 in Hull, Brian passed away suddenly on September 8, 2017 in Ottawa. Dearly loved eldest son of the late Harold and Barbara (Wright). He leaves behind a legacy of loving memories to be forever cherished by his wife, Patti, children Krista (Brad Durie) and Jodi (Andy Downs), and their mother, Libby MacDonald, his stepdaughters, Jamie and Kristen Smith, grandchildren, Avery and Tori Durie and Carter Downs. Loving big brother of Nancy (David Porter), Sandy (Peter Foley), David (Gail), Susan (David Smyth), and Maureen (Bob Carreau). Fondly remembered by father-in-law, Frank Morrison, sisters-in-law Melanie (Garry Hawkins) and Sheila (Paul Reed), and brother-in-law, Greg Morrison (Jenn). Brian will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Memories will forever be ingrained in the hearts of all who knew him, including his many friends, neighbours, and fellow sports enthusiasts. Brian left his footprint on the hearts of many teachers and students throughout his 34 year career as a teacher, vice principal, and principal with the Ottawa Catholic School Board. He championed the underdog and always tried to open doors for their success. Known to many as B-Mac and the Big Kahuna, Brian was an avid sports fan and a talented athlete. He had a passion for football, golf, curling, fishing, baseball, and washer toss. He truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with family and friends, working away in his garden, and drinking a pint on the porch. He also enjoyed travelling, playing cards, and barbequing in the backyard. Family times were a special treasure to him. Brian was very charismatic and had a unique ability to reach people in a meaningful way, whether it be by singing a country tune or throwing off a witty one-liner. Brian was larger than life, a friend to all and life of the party! He will forever be loved and missed. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, Walkley Chapel 1255 Walkley Rd, Ottawa, ON K1V 6P9 613-731-1255 Wednesday, September 13 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral mass will be at St. Maurice (4 Perry St.) on Thursday, September 14 at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Youth Services Bureau or the Ottawa Mission. My thoughts and prayers are with you Patti, and all the Macdonald family during this very difficult time.

I was very saddened to hear of Brian's passing. I had the honour of crossing paths with him at two different stages of my life.

The first was having him as my VP at St Joe's and Notre Dame, where he truly showed how much he cared about the students in his charge.

The second was when he was the Principal who gave me my first permanent teaching position at St Pat's. I had the pleasure of working with him for 5 years, and have fond memories of my time at St Pat's.

Regardless of his position, he had such a great ability to connect with everyone he met, and once he knew you, you were never forgotten. He had a very generous nature with everyone!

He will be missed!

"Still the good kid", Giulietta

My sincerest condolences to all of Brian's family. I knew Brian from our days at St. Joseph's High in the early 1960's. Recall he always had a glint in his eye and a mischievous smile. Had the good fortune to run into him again at the 50th reunion for St. Joe's in 2009 and he was the same character I remembered. RIP Brian.
