Brock JACOBS Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Nov. 5 to Nov. 7, 2013.
JACOBS, Brock Langley
April 6, 1951 - November 1, 2013
Brock Jacobs entered into Heaven on Friday, November 1, 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer. Brock is loved and missed by Jane, his wife of thirty-seven years. He was a loving father to his children, Marina (Bruce) Cathcart, Marc (Karen Shewchuk) Jacobs and Evan Jacobs and loving Pappa to his precious granddaughters, Addison and Whitney Cathcart. Brock is also survived by his siblings and their families, Arden (Mary Priestner) Jacobs, Dariel (Keith Shirk) Jacobs, Gavin (Loreen) Jacobs, Greg Jacobs; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, the Colvin and Cameron families, dearest friends and his "football" family. Brock was born in Red Deer in 1951 and called Calgary home turf where he attended school, played all sports, worked and raised a family. He was well known in the sporting goods industry and on the football field. Brock coached hundreds of children for over forty years at all levels of minor football in Calgary and was Administrator of numerous teams and programs within the football community. He was a lifetime Calgary Stampeder ticket holder, enjoyed golf, the Boston Red Sox, NY Rangers and cutting the lawn. Brock was well respected and well-loved and will be truly missed. A Celebration of Brock's life will be held at FIRST ALLIANCE CHURCH (12345 - 40 Street S.E.) on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 10:29 a.m. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to KidSport Canada - Alberta, Box 36107 Lakeview RPO, Calgary, AB T3E 7C6 (www.kidsport.ab.ca) or to the Calgary Colon Cancer's "Top To Bottom" Hockey Tournament, reference Team Calgary (http://ccctoptobottom.ca/calgary.php). Only this day finding out about Brock's passing. I was fortunate enough to play with Brock with the Colts, to be a part of his coaching staff for a time with the Golden Hawks and to call him a friend. Saw Brock at the Calgary Italian Club after his illness, more frail but that grin and spirit still shining!

Jane, my thoughts are with you.

Brock had a way that made everyone around him feel special. He was an amazing teacher and coach who will be sorely missed. He was a coach ahead of his time that went before his time - we will all miss his smile and laugh.

My deepest condolences to Brock's family. He was my best childhood friend. We constantly played football at the Triangle on Exshaw Road, growing-up on the same block, having been only separated by a quick dash down the alley way. Brock was the catalyst for our football games. We would sneak into McMahon Stadium and sneak on to the football field to ask the pros for their chin-straps. I will miss him.

The one pix I had on my computer -- Brock in the background at a Prairie Football Conference awards banquet.

I can't even imagine the grief Jane and the family are going through. Everyone in the football family have lost a great man, and a dear friend in Brock. There isn't enough space on the Internet to include all the stories and wonderful memories I have of Brock.

He was always so gracious, willing to help a friend, and selfless in his commitment to ensuring young men had an opportunity to play football. All the laughs, beers, and moments we shared are especially precious to me. I'm blessed to have known him. God speed my friend. Love to Jane and the family.

November 10, 2013

Our deepest sympathies Jane.

For me, I spent many years on the sidelines enjoying and entertaining football talk with Brock, whether that was at Mewata Stadium or @ Shouldice Park. As a family, we spent several years @ Kodiaks/Golden Hawks practises and games where the Jacobs were the pillars of strength for the team. We know that for our boys, Brock taught them much about respect of the game, and their team mates, and their opponents. They carry these valuable lessons with them today as they move through life.
Please know that in our house Jane, Brocks name will always be synonymous with Good Sportsmanship and a Sense of Fairplay. He was Mr. Football in Amateur Sports Calgary, and Alberta. He will be missed, be we will always remember.

Jane and family,
We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Brock. He had such an influence on the sporting community in Calgary and on our own family. He coached both of our boys at one time or another and his enthusiasm in the Summer Games teams was legendary. He has coached so many Hilltoppers players over the years that he is one of us. We pray you will find encouragement in knowing that Brock touched so many in his life.

Many condolences Jane and Family on the loss of Brock he will be dearly missed by all who loved him. He had a smile and a laugh that could warm your heart. Peace be with you at this time. They say time heals all wounds I fear the loss of a partner may take the sharing of memories and the love and hugs of those left behind. Brock was always there for all of us no matter the weather or his health he loved the kids and the game and sharing stories. Brock is gone too soon from the people he loved and from the lives he touched. My wish for you and your family is that the time til you meet again passes with the joy of sharing the things Brock enjoyed.

Dear Jane and family, please accept my sincers condolences on the passing of your husband Brock. I played with Brock on a wonderful Calgary Colts (1971) team coached by the late Dale Parsons and Brock was a big reason why it was a great team. I am so very sorry for your loss, so strange that I just saw Jane & Brock at the PLC ER just not long ago, where I shared my loss with you....strange how that happens. Brock will leave a huge hole in your heart & in your lives, but eventually you will be able to fill it with all the precious memories you have of him. Best advice I have is that when people ask if there is anything they can do for you, grab your calendar & say, Yes, let's meet for coffee, lunch or whatever!! Good for your mental health, truly!

To Jane and Family:

We are all very sad that a wonderful, fun loving husband and dad has gone on to bigger and better things! Please know that we are all here for you and your family and will do all we can to help you through this very difficult time.

We all loved Brock, and a personal highlight was when he was a participant in the "Mr. Canada Pageant" and the Lip Synk presentation where he "dressed in drag" as one of the Supremes for the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Evening for the Crossroads Community Assoc. volunteers. Another personal highlight was when he did his last "dress in drag" at my wedding!

He was always a great sport and a lot of fun to be around, and he will be really missed.

I know that Brock will be watching down from above when the Stampeders win the Grey Cup!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, your family, your extended family and friends.

Love From some of your Crossroads Community friends:

Joyce and Paul, Tina, Vicki, John & Val, Brad & Gloria, Ken & Myrna, Linda & Walt, Marlene McCook, Denise, Jim & Sandy, and all those community residents whom I have not mentioned but also share in your grief.

Love always

November 5, 2013

Thanks to Brock, our whole family came to love football. He helped rescue the Crescent Heights High School football program, helped coach and brought in wonderful community coaches. Due to his amazing and patient influence, all 4 of our boys got to play in a CHHS Sr. final city championship game. Brock was there at each game, either on the sidelines or up in the box. My most poignant memory is the city final where Brock was coaching his youngest son, Evan, and when they lost by 2 points on the last play of the game, father and son wept and embraced each other on the field. Brock hugged every single player; none of those boys will ever forget that. He took every player he ever coached under his wing, and helped them fly. No-one will ever forget him or replace that kind, gentle spirit that surrounded him and all that he did. We are so grateful we were blessed to cross paths in life and will be forever enriched by the years we have been able to travel this road in some small way together. God bless you, Brock, and may your love of life, family, friends and football live forever in the hearts of all those who mourn your loss. You will be so deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family, whose time with you was far too short. You have fought the good fight, you have won the battle, you have finished the race. May you rest now in peace.
All our Love, Deb Kotlewski & Family, Calgary.

Dear Jane and family, please accept our deepest sympathies on the loss of Brock. He was certainly the most unique and likeable football coach I have had the pleasure to be around, who else would stop a practise to get his players to look at a strange cloud formation. His influence on the players he worked with will not be forgotten.
Sincerely,
Dave Underdahl & family
