C. YALTHO Obituary
On Sunday, November 16, 2014 Dr. C. Mathew Yaltho passed away at the age of 69 after a brief courageous battle with cancer.
Dr. Mathew Yaltho was born on May 6, 1945, to Mathew and Mariamma Cheerakathottom. He was raised in Pothanikad, Kerala, India and graduated from the Calicut Medical School in 1970. Following his medical training, he practised as a General Practitioner for 2 years in Pulpally, Kerala. He specialized in Tropical Medicine from the School of Tropical Medicine in Calcutta, India (D.T.M & H). He moved to England at the end of 1973 from where he got his D.P.M. (London) and his M.R.C.Psych (U.K), after which he moved to, Ottawa, Canada in September 1976 where he obtained his F.R.C.P.(C). He eventually settled down in Edmonton with his wife and two children in 1980.
Dr. Yaltho was a practicing Psychiatrist at both Alberta Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital and was a Clinical Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta. He was an educator and mentor to several generations of medical students and residents. He was a compassionate practitioner who was committed to his patients and to the field of mental health.
Dr. Yaltho was dedicated to his family and community. He was a member of the St. Gregorios Orthodox Church and is remembered fondly for his hospitality, generosity and kindness. He loved to read and travel. He was also a nature enthusiast who enjoyed being outdoors, tending to his land.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Valza Yaltho, two children, Dr. Smitha Yaltho (Dr. Ravi Thakur) and Dr. Toby Yaltho (Dr. Saira George) and his three beautiful grandchildren, Avani, Layla and Jacob. He is loved and missed deeply by a large extended family including his siblings: C.M Gheevarghese (Annamma), Annie Abraham (late Kunju), Mary Joseph (Joseph) and C.M Mathai (Sosamma). He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to thank the clergy, their friends, relatives, and the staff at the University of Alberta hospital whose support and love over these past few months, have been of tremendous comfort.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at St. Gregorios Orthodox Church (15603 99 Ave NW in Edmonton) on Friday, November 21 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held the following day, Saturday, November 22 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gregorios Orthodox Church.
Graveside Service to follow at Westlawn Memorial Gardens at 16310 Stony Plain Road.
The family asks that in lieu of any flowers and gifts that a donation be made to The Mental Health Foundation, a registered charitable organization, based in Edmonton, working for positive change in the area of addiction and mental health. I worked with Dr. Yaltho for many years at the RAH unit 62. He was a kind and compassionate man and considerate of his patients, sometimes opening his own wallet to make sure they had bus fare and food. I rarely saw him lose his temper and I enjoyed working with him. My condolences to his family.

Dr. Yaltho was my Dr. for over 10 years. He was a compassionate man, and a great listener. I'm going to miss him very much. He was always there for me. Mathew was a great colleague and friend as we worked together on 9BSouth through the 80s and again later at Mental Health and the Royal Alex. He was a fine psychiatrist, kind, sensitive, expert, and hardworking, devoted to his patients, supportive of his coworkers, and a mentor for students and residents. He will be missed.

Hello Valsachechi, Smitha & Toby, we are deeply saddened to hear about the sudden departure of Dr. Yaltho. He was a very kind gentle man and will always be remembered for his down-to-earth personality. We cherish the opportunity that we had to spend some time with him few months ago when he visited us in Ottawa. His sincere advises that day were helpful guidance for us. So it was rather shocking to hear about the sudden turn of events.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Matthew Yaltho's family. I will forever be grateful for his kindness, which he extended to both his patients and colleagues. He was generous with his time and energy, nearly to a fault. As well, he was a true mentor, always advocating for junior colleagues such as myself. Only later did I come to understand the degree of service he has provided over his career. He was truly a gentleman, and I will miss his gentle spirit.

We had opportunity to participate in several occasions with him for the community projects, when we were in Edmonton. He was very much considerate to the children and his advises were helpful to the young generation. We also could see him on his visit in Dubai.
