CARL HUGHES Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2015.
Carl James Hughes, 89, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away January 28, 2015, at Saint Joseph Medical Center with his family. Carl was born to Carl and Nellie Hughes on Dec. 1, 1925, in Kansas City. He graduated from R. T. Coles Vocational High School in June of 1943 and entered the United States Navy following graduation. Carl studied Business Administration at Roosevelt College on the GI Bill and later met and married Vernita Jewel Merritt. He provided for his family mainly through working at the US Post Office where he retired. Following the death of Vernita, he later remarried to Bobetta Taylor- Hughes who preceded him in death. The impact the Lord had on his life was evident through his relationship with Jesus and his drive to serve the Church and give back to the community. Carl could be found many a day working with the youth through the church's Boy Scout program which graduated many Eagle Scouts and successful young men. He served on the Trustee Board and was a Sunday School instructor and Superintendent for many years. He also led the Save Our Sons program within the church. Working with the Boys Club and serving as baseball coach and commissioner of the Inter City Athletic Association provided Carl with much joy. He truly celebrated the successes of young people. Carl leaves son, Virgil, daughter-in- law, Deborah, grandsons, Christopher and Alexander, great-grandson, Anthony, niece and nephew, Leslie Elaine Hoover and Stephen Hoover, and other relatives. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Alphonso. Friends and family can celebrate the life of Carl with a visitation at 9 a.m. and a service at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, 3808 Clever II Blvd., Kansas City. Burial Forrest Hill Cemetery, KCMO. Arr.: LAJ Funeral Chapel, (816) 8921-1800.

I am grateful for the life of Mr. Hughes. Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.

Carl's unselfish, caring, and joyful spirit endeared all who knew him. Please take comfort that God promises to eradicate death so that no one will ever again experience the pain of losing a loved one (Re 21:4). Until then may God provide the comfort and peace to sustain the family during this difficult time.
