Carol Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2024.
Carol Dahl Baker passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024 at Sunnybrook Palliative Care in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Carol was born on May 15, 1940, in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, to the late Rulon and Phoebe Dahl. Beloved wife of Samuel Baker, devoted mother to Susan Bodily(Dan), Joanne Baker, David Baker (Laura), Janis McBride (Rob), Michael Baker, and Daniel Baker (Keith Phillips), and loving sister of Bernice Baker and Larry Dahl. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 3 (soon to be 4) great grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Rulon and Phoebe Dahl, brothers Max and Jack, sister Marie, and granddaughter Jayme Terran.

A highly regarded leader and educator in her community, Carol was fully engaged in both the spiritual and social life of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in nearly every available capacity, from coaching both boys' and girls' basketball teams to leader in youth organizations and the ladies' benevolent association, the Relief Society, as well as being a long-time teacher of scripture and other subjects. She also devoted endless hours in pastoral counseling to individuals and families.

Carol was educated at the University of Alberta (where she met Sam in 1960), the Sorbonne in Paris, and Brigham Young University, where she obtained a BA in French. Sam and Carol were married in the LDS temple in Cardston, Alberta in November,1963 after completing their studies. Their first child, Susan, was born in Calgary in 1965. Carol taught French at Mount Royal College while Sam began his career as a lawyer with McLeod Dixon (now Norton Rose). The young family moved to Toronto in 1966 where Sam joined the nascent Canadian office of Baker and McKenzie, and Carol dedicated herself to the rearing of their 6 children and her service in her church callings.

Carol was a talented alto vocalist who, in addition to a lifetime of participation in church choirs, was a member of several singing groups including ""Opus Nine"", a mixed quartet with her husband, Sam and dear friends Melissa Wilson and Patrick Gani. She also formed the Don Valley Trio with Melissa and another dear friend, Lois McDonnall. Carol was always an avid reader in all genres and encouraged her children with exposure to literature as well as the arts. She was also well known as a committed basketball, tennis and curling fan.

Carol's intelligence, inquisitiveness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Services to celebrate Carol's life will be held at Highland Funeral Home in Scarborough, Ontario, on Saturday, April 6, 2024. The viewing will be at 1pm, followed by the service at 2pm.

Carol was my "big sister". Actually she was our babysitter but she was like a big sister. When I was small I called her dad Rulon my "little daddy". I remember her spending a lot of time with my family other than babysitting. I can remember having "sleep overs" at her home. When she babysat me she would tell us bedtime stories that she made up about our favorite actors and actresses. For me it was a love story about Elvis Presley and Sandra Dee. She was a mentor for me in my teenage years and would write me letters when she was away at University offering me counsel and advice. When my husband Gary and I moved to Waterloo, Ontario to attend University she and Sam provided a place for me to stay until we could get into our apartment. I recall going to visit them while we lived in Ontario and it was always such a fun time. Carol and I were both pregnant at the same time which was a fun experience to share in 1972. She called us a few months ago and we had such a nice visit on the phone. I loved Carol as she touched my life for good and I will miss her. Our love goes out to Sam and his children. We pray for your peace and comfort as you adjust to your life without her. Sincerely Barbara Baker Pack
