CAROL GRIMES

Carol A. Grimes was born on March 11, 1931, in West Orange, NJ., and died on Sept. 10, 2016, in Tucson, AZ. She is survived by her cousins, John (Budd) Schaefer (Katherine) of Australia. Robert Louis Schaefer (Matilde) of New Jersey, and James Schaefer of Florida. She is also survived by extended family members Robert H. Schaefer of NJ, Karen Resnick of PA, Chizuka Schaefer of NJ, and Ashley Schaefer of NJ.

Carol taught for 38 years at the elementary and junior high levels in Middletown, NJ, as well as several years in Indonesia. She often was described as a "free spirit" in teaching and loved her work as a classroom teacher, a Reading Specialist, a Learning Specialist, and a Computer teacher. She earned her Master's degree at Kean.

Golf, tennis, skiing, biking and swimming were a big part of Carol's life, as well as reading and board games. She was a computer "guru" when computers were first introduced into the classrooms, was a MAC fan, and often attended the MAC conferences in San Francisco to learn about the newest products. Carol traveled extensively and always looked forward to her next cruise.

After moving to Green Valley, Carol was a member of the Valley Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Stephen Minister and Deacon. She was a volunteer instructor at the Computer Club and also volunteered at Madera Canyon.

Carol was always energetic, outgoing and always focused on the positive in everyone that she met. She battled with Alzheimers in her last years.

A memorial service will be held a the Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley on Friday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. in the Joe Hawkins Chapel.

She was my teacher in 6th grade in 1969. I'll always have fond memories.

Miss Grimes introduced us to Madeleine L'Engle's 'A Wrinkle in Time'; she read it aloud to the class and it was the favorite part of my day. Her lessons on studying different countries and cultures were wonderful. I still recall doing a report on Burma with my friend Debbie, and how a classmate's mom came in and dressed one of the girls in all the layers of a kimono for the report on Japan. Carol Grimes was a truly superb & kind teacher. She made school something to look forward to each day. Her life will have a ripple effect throughout the world.

The best teacher ever. Both my husband and I had her ( one year apart) and agree she was our favorite.

Miss Grimes was my teacher in 6th grade. She really made learning fun. She inspired me to become a sociologist. I was in awe of her and made a huge positive difference in my life.

Mrs Grimes was my favorite teacher ever. I was the kind of child who needed to be handled with understanding and a firm temperment. She was the perfect person for me. I had her in 6th grade at Lincroft Elementary School. She made learning fun and made me feel worthy of her praise. I'm so glad that I came back to thank her for her leadership and effort when I graduated college. I love you Mrs. Grimes.
