Carol Pickering Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 6, 2024.
Northfield - Carol Elizabeth Pickering, née Campbell, passed away on June 19, 2024, at the age of 75 in Evanston, IL after a number of years fighting myleofibrosis, a rare bone marrow blood cancer. Born on February 6, 1949, Carol lived her life nurturing those she loved. Daughter of Charles and Ruth Campbell, née Butler. She is survived by her sister Margaret Saari, née Campbell. Her children Matthew Campbell Pickering (spouse Kelley Canerdy Pickering née Harris) and Marena Beck Rudy née Pickering (spouse William Evan Rudy). Her grandchildren Audrey Pickering (17), Blake Pickering (15), Campbell Rudy (9), Reese Rudy (7), and Elle Rudy (5). She was a devoted mother, a loving wife, a nurturing grandmother, a caring friend, a compassionate volunteer.

Carol's life touched many. In her early years she was an educator before deciding to stay at home and raise her children. She spent much of her life in Hudson, Ohio, with a brief spell in Hingham, MA and some time in Hilton Head, SC. She spent her last few years close to her children in Northfield, IL. Wherever she went she found a way to give back, particularly in regards to education. An active member of P.E.O. International, she spent much of her adult life focused on the advancement of women. A life long learner, she worked for years at various book-sellers, particularly the Book Bin in Northbrook, IL, and The Learned Owl in Hudson. Her favorite gift to give and receive was a book.

In addition to life-long learning, Carol's faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and interactions. A devout member for many years of the First Congregational Church of Hudson, Carol used the grace of her beliefs every day. Her wallet was full of favorite passages and sayings, each peaceful and up-lifting. She lived her life selflessly, always thoughtful and concerned for others even in her final days.

More than anything, Carol was a mom, a grandmother, a sister, a friend. Nothing brought her more joy than time with those she cared about. Whether walking her beloved dog Duffy (and before him Reilly and Taz), cheering grandchildren at activities and sporting events, reading to or baking cookies with loved ones or just spending time sitting and talking with family, her life was filled with laughter and love.

In her memory there will be a funeral service at First Congregational Church of Hudson Ohio on Monday August 12th at 10 am. There will be a private internment to follow at Lakewood Cemetery. In leiu of flowers please donate to P.E.O. International.

After her passing her family found a simple phrase amongst her keepsakes "smile more, worry less." Thank you Mom, we will forever love and miss you.
