Mary Carolyn Baker Balog, 71, of Hampton, Georgia passed away on March 9th, 2013 in Atlanta, GA. Carolyn was born in Harriman, Tennessee, to Charles Granville and Roxana Foreman Baker on February 24, 1942. She went to high school at Harriman High School, where her mother taught Latin, French and Spanish and graduated in 1960. She went on to earn an associate degree from Virginia Intermont College in 1962, a bachelor's degree in journalism and business and master's degree in library science in 1965 and 1975 respectively from the University of Tennessee. She worked as a research librarian for the Knoxville, Tennessee, Athens, Tennessee and Tampa, Florida libraries. In 1970, Carolyn married Robert Andrew Balog, and upon his graduation from medical school, they moved to Hampton, Georgia. Carolyn and Bob started a family medical practice in Hampton, which they operated for 11 years until Bob's death in 1995. Carolyn was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society Daughters of the Union, National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, National Society Dames of the Court of Honor, National Society United States Daughters of 1812 and National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century. A memorial service will be held at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, Georgia on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive friends immediately following the service. Carolyn is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Ransdell Balog Najjar (Samuel) of Atlanta, GA and Rachel Anne Balog Donnelly (Zackery) of Decatur, GA, her three grandchildren, Colin Andrew, Finnegan Bishop and Roane Elizabeth, brother Joseph Granville Baker of Rochester, NY, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Balog Ozbun (Steve) and nephew Andrew Ozbun of Murfreesboro, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may either be made to the Roane County Heritage Commission, PO Box 738, Kingston, TN 37763 or to the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, 4170 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Felix G. Fernandez and his team of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine, who treated Carolyn with compassion, respect and dignity.
