Charles PEMBERTON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 2 to Mar. 4, 2013.

PEMBERTON, Charles Everett
'Charlie'

Died February 27, 2013. Charlie was born March 24, 1918 in Sacramento. He attended Bret Harte Elementary, Stanford Middle School and graduated from Sacramento High School in 1936. While in high school, he was a paper boy for The Sacramento Bee; in 1934 he was the featured in a news article as a Bee Carrier with 'high hopes of becoming an engineer.' After graduation, Charlie became an apprentice boilermaker for the Western Pacific Railroad Company. He completed his apprenticeship in 1940 and took a position at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He eventually became a supervisor and led a team of pipe fitters and metal workers who helped repair ships damaged in Pearl Harbor. He spent the duration of WW II at Mare Island where in 1944 he met and married Dorothy Wheeler, his wife of 67 years. He and Dorothy raised two children, Karen (Pemberton) Tallha of Woodland, CA and Charles Russell Pemberton of Eagle Point, OR.

At the end of WW II Charlie began a long career with the State of California, starting with the Department of Highways and later as a safety inspector for CAL/OSHA. He retired in 1982.

Charlie deeply loved his family and spent many years caring for his mother Ella and his disabled brother Jack.

Education was very important to Charlie, his own college career was cut short when his household was quarantined due to his brother's illness. He generously funded his grandchildren's college education, and was so proud of them.

Charlie's wife Dorothy died in 2011. He missed her every day.

In addition to his children, Charlie is survived by his son-in-law David Tallha, his granddaughter Carrie (Tallha) Tanner (husband Tim), and grandson Daniel Tallha (wife Holly) and his great-grandson, Charles Everett Tanner. The family would like to thank the caring staff at The Waterleaf for making Charlie's last two years comfortable and enjoyable, and Vitas Hospice Care for their support.
Services will be held at East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park & Mortuary: 9189 E. Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove, CA. Visitation on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 9:00AM to 12:30PM and Graveside Service to follow at 1:00PM.
